Greetings-
Many cars these days last super long and accumulate many miles. Does anyone replace flexible brake hoses as part of their maintenance or just let them alone? I had two hoses rust through at the union between metal and rubber and have been concerned about this since.

I've changed them several times on various cars as preventive maintenance....especially if I'm already doing calipers or in-depth work on drum brakes. It helps that the Rock Auto closeout section frequently has them for pennies on the dollar, so it's often a cheap and easy proposition.

Logic would dictate that changing rubber components responsible for the braking of the vehicle should be accomplished on a scheduled basis. We give tires a life cycle based on age, we change hoses and belts based on age, and yet the brake hoses that are out of sight and out of mind never seem to get thought of.

My opinion is that yes, they should be replaced at the 10 year mark or 100,000 mile mark or even 150,000 miles. With this being said, my wife's 26 year old BMW is still running around on the original rubber brake hoses. I do keep her insurance policy paid up though. Anything else would be irresponsible.

I did the front ones on my mom's Fusion because getting it done at my work seemed to never happen, there was a recall on it. I just want to point out that whoever designed that U clip and then didn't put a flat on the hose side to tighten the fitting from the line needs to be water boarded.
