What's been your experience with 'boxed' oil compared to oil in plastic containers leak wise?

I bought two 12 quart boxes of SOPUS oils and both leaked over time. I bought two 12 quart boxes of Mobil 1 oils and neither leaked. Ironically the only normal plastic containers I've had leakage with were also SOPUS products. Maybe SOPUS needs to make stronger containers.

PS: I probably won't buy boxed oil again unless I plan to use it immediately as I don't think they 'store' well.

I have only bought Mobil 1 in the boxes and they never leaked. They dripped slightly out of the spout, but that isn't its fault.

They leaked after what period of time exactly?

I have 6 - 12 qt boxes of Supertech when they were clearanced. I recall 1 box at Walmart on the shelf was leaking or was leaked on. I left it there.
None of mine are leaking. If they do, I'll buy or reuse a bucket and pour them in.

I picked up 7 or 8 of the 12 quart SuperTech boxes when Walmart clearanced them about 18 months ago. No leaks yet.

For what it's worth, fluids have been distributed in that format since forever. Wine may be most familiar to the consumer. Ketchup, mustard, soft drink syrup, milk, etc. are all sold that way to institutions.

I bought all of my boxed oil on 'CLEARANCE' and some sat for a couple of years in a climate controlled environment. When I found them leaking I poured the rest into 5 and 1 quart containers. One box lost about a quart and a half. As I stated earlier....it seems SOPUS containers are weaker than the competition even though their oils are great.

The leaks were all my fault, so call them "spills." Trying to operate the valve while tipping the back of the box up while holding the bottle underneath... something had to give.

It's also hard for me to judge the fill rate visually or by weight of the recipient bottle, as I'm holding too much stuff.

I used an old 5 qt M1 jug as the "transfer" bottle to get the oil to the car. It did have a slightly visible sight gauge on the side but it wasn't useful in my contorted position.

I'd do it again if I could get those 3 gal boxes for $32.

In my younger days I used to buy Valvoline XL-III from NAPA in the box. I never had a single issue with leakage from the Valvoline packaging.

thats my fear of buying boxed oil. could you stand the box on the backside? so the spout upright.
  • Avoid leaks and spills: For boxed oil that has been opened, storing it with the spout upright is even more critical. The dispenser may not be a perfect seal after repeated use, so keeping it elevated minimizes the chance of leaks.

I hate boxed oil. Usually get Supertech. I transfer it to 5 qt. jugs. Never leaked during shipping though. Just pouring it, and trying to get ALL of the oil out of the bag is a hassle. Gotta take the bag out of the box. ALWAYS ends up in a small mess of some kind. Stopped buying it. Went back to the 5 qt jug.

I was wondering about this as it's slightly cheaper to buy the Valvoline Restore and Protect box from Valvoline (at least the one time I checked) vs the equivalent amount in 5qt bottles from Walmart but the savings were tiny. It seems like I'll just stick with the 5qt bottles after seeing the comments here.

Ive used many boxes of M1. Never had a leak. When empty i remove the 'bag' and get every last bit I can out from the spout. Then the bag goes into the trash and the cardboard gets burned in the stove or campfires.

I only buy the boxes if the oil is cheaper/qt.

Have bought several of the Mobil 1 0w40 garage packs and none leaked, presently have a 5 gal box of PRP and it hasn't leaked either.
