Bought another car today

I picked up the local buy&sell paper as soon as they got it in the store and looked through it. Wasn't much that interested me but I did see a small ad for a 93 Crown Victoria. $1000 OBO. I thought to myself that it couldn't be much good for that price, but I went and took a look at it anyway. It's actually in really nice shape, very little rust, no dents or out of shape body panels. Motor runs good and doesn't burn oil. Transmission shifts fine. AC still works, I was told. It's high mileage at 290000 km, but it doesn't seem any worse for wear. The transmission was rebuilt by a transmission shop in town at a cost of $1500. Heater core was replaced at a cost of $300. AC system was upgraded and recharged to the tune of $500. The guy who was selling it just went through a divorce and he doesn't need the car so he's selling it. I offered him $900 and he accepted it. I should have it on the road by Saturday. I snapped a few pics with my digital camera, they turned out kinda dark but have a look anyway. I also took a short video of the car too.

What kind of oil & other fluids are you going to use in it?

Yep, it's got the 4.6. I'm going to run Maxlife 10w30 in the engine, I've had good results with Maxlife 5w30 in my Accord so I think it'll be good in the Crown Vic. Haven't quite decided on what to use in the transmission but I'll probably stick with a good non-synthetic Mercon III type of fluid. For axle lube I'm gonna go with a synthetic fluid. Don't know what's available for synthetic gear lubes, the only type I can remember seeing is Syntec 75W90. Do you know what Ford called for in the axle? I should also drain the radiator and fill it up with fresh coolant. Good ol' green Prestone for me.

Good choice with the Maxlife. If I were you, I might use Maxlife Synthetic 5w30 during the winter. I can't even imagine the kind of cold you get up there. BRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

As far as axle lube recommendations go, I don't have any Ford/Motorcraft documentation that goes back to '93. I'm sure the Syntec 75w90 will be an excellent choice.

I assume the product offerings in Canada are a little different than here in the USA, but if I were you, I would look for the following in 75w90:

Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90
Mobil 1 75w90
Valvoline Synthetic 75w90
Motorcraft Synthetic 75w90

Those are the most readily available synthetic gear lubes here in Alabama, anyway.

nice buy.... i was just searching some used car sites and got depressed, almost every car i like for sale is an automatic... wth ? thats no fun. $900 for a crown vic in good shape is awesome

That's cool, I have some cousins coming this spring who can't drive stick. They're under 25 so renting a car will be expensive. I'm going to get a vicky or caprice for them to tool around in... that I can resell for about what I pay.

Those are great cars. I have a deputy friend that still drives unit at over 90mph every day or so with 400,000 miles! That isa a county owned car...
My father put over 500,000 on his before the trans went out.
They are really good cars and you cant buy a car/suv with that much room anymore and get 25 mpg.

I have a 91 Grand Marquis in near-showroom condition. These cars are very underrated. That's why you can get good deals on used models.

I brought the beast home today. Ahhh, such a nice quiet ride! Even tooling along at 90 mph, all I hear is just some low volume wind noise, 'cept when I kick it down then it sounds like an ol' 4 barrel carb! All kinds of power off the line. I haven't tried it yet but I imagine I could smoke the rear tires pretty easily if I wanted. I did notice a few small problems with the car on the way home. The wipers don't work very well on high speed, they drag across the window. Low speed is fine. The car seems to wander a bit on the road, especially if it's windy and gusting. It also feels a bit funny going over a bump, like the car is twisted sideways or something. Maybe I just need to get used to the feel of a full frame, plush riding car.

Say what you will about domestic vehicles, but they really represent fantastic used-car values.

Looks like a great find. I've been thinking about picking one up myself, to make my own version of a Mercury Marauder. Just not sure if I need another projuct right now...
