personally, I can handle a 500/month car payment for myself, but I'm paying more into my house to cut years down and have to pay for our daughter's $864 monthly daycare bill. I got another five years of monthly daycare bills. Nick, I imagine your single and plan to stay with your folks for awhile. If you ever have to move out and be on your own, the expenses will pile up. I would pay the car off asap.

I'm amazed how much new cars cost. The mortgage on my duplex house with tax and insurance is $536 per month, and my tenants pay me $545 for rent. I live in the lower apartment for just the cost of utilities.
I haven't made a car payment in 10 years either.
My fiance and I are borrowing her mother's Cruze this weekend to drive to Ohio to visit family, heck that is a luxury car compared to my Saturn Ion.
And I make a salary very similar to the guy with the $500 mazda payment. I pull into work with a bunch of people with leased cars, living in leased apartments, some with even leased furniture and appliances, bragging about some timeshare in a far away state.
Different folks different strokes.
In this economy, I have seen too many jobs outsourced overseas, and plenty others sent with walking papers for no reason at all.
I'll spend my money on my 401k and my savings account.

Yeah after spending a few minutes read back through some of Nick's past postings and some of the threads he started about the "buy American" but we all need to remember that he is young and like us the world does have things to offer. Narrow mindsets do get in the way.
I like his choice in a vehicle.
I wish when I was his age I learned about payments and such and I'd be in a different place then I am today but he will learn too.

I put $400 every week into my 401K and would like to get a new car but I don't even go to the yearly Auto Show for fear I will catch the new car bug. I agree with you on your personal financial 'game plan' for the future.

Well here are some pics I managed to grab tonight. I'll post some more tomorrow after work when I can get some in the daytime. Drove it to get dinner after bringing it home. They literally didn't put it on the lot until yesterday. I was the first person to drive it besides the dealer guys, and it had 4 miles when I drove it off the lot, and that includes me driving it around the lot yesterday.
All I can say is, it's awesome. It's going to take some getting used to having to the stiffer gas pedal (which also hinges at the bottom, not the top like I'm used to), and the heavier steering. But it does handle extremely well, and it's still comfortable and smooth on the highway, if firmer, which is okay with me. The brakes are simply phenomenal, they remind me of the mustang. The interior is great too, and the touchscreen ipod integration is excellent too, video demonstration below. I averaged ~27mpg from when I drove it off the lot home, then back out and back. Which was 50% city/50% highway. It isn't fast, and you have to get used to having to give it some gas to get it to downshift, but that's not unexpected for the car that it is with the engine it has. It has good low end grunt though, and the transmission is... Well, other than being reluctant to downshift, it's flawless. Shifts are fast and seamless, and low speed maneuvering is just so much smoother than the cruze. Overall, I'm extremely pleased. My mom likes it too, though she is really leaning towards the outback she drove tonight.
Also I just liked the smaller size, the non-cvt transmission, the styling, and the way it drove compared to the outback. Don't get me wrong the ouback is a great car, but it's not to my tastes personally.

Heh, no way I could ever rent an apartment out. Too many issues with tenants for me to deal with that, not with a full time job on the side. Different strokes indeed. But it sounds like you've got a good setup going.

Heh, no way I could ever rent an apartment out. Too many issues with tenants for me to deal with that, not with a full time job on the side. Different strokes indeed. But it sounds like you've got a good setup going.
Nick, I'm interested to hear if your impressions of the Equinox change over time. You were initially very impressed with the isolated ride of the Equinox; I'm wondering if you'll grow to prefer a more engaging driving experience that your new car will provide. You and I have had a few conversations before about an SUV with sporty handling vs. one with a boulevard ride. You will experience the difference between the two firsthand here.
I like the CX-5 a lot. The interior has a very clean look to it, unlike many small SUVs today. I don't think I ever will be a fan of separate gauge binnacles like this has and most all Chevys have these days, but I like everything else. It handles great (which I like) and is efficient, too. The small motor would be fine for me, especially if it's got six forward speeds to work with.
By the way, I WILL have to second the notion that Nick's next unpredicted purchase will be the iPhone 5!

I'm not much into 5-doors (or really even 4-doors), crossovers or all wheel drive myself, but that's just me and it doesn't mean someone else shouldn't be.

I would recommend some OEM all weather mats. I have them in both of our cars and the quality meets or exceeds that of aftermarket mats, they fit perfect, and they keep the carpet below brand new.

I have them, I'm just not using them at the moment. I'll put them in at some point. I generally just like the carpet ones better, but yeah.
