Bought a 2014 BMW 328d 💸

It's a 2014 328d. So far I've averaged 40mpg and that's half city traffic.
Because it's a diesel it does sound a little funny and shake a little more than the gas i6 cars do but it drives great.

Now I just have to save up for when the cp4 injection pump decides to make confetti

Question, is failure of the cp4 injection pump inevitable, or just common? Can anything be done, such as adding cetane boosters or lubricity additives? What makes them fail?
 
Just make sure to run a good lubricity additive with every tank of fuel, replace the water separator/filter regularly, and make sure the system is well primed after each fuel filter change before starting and that CP4 will likely outlive the car.

I've romanticised owning a diesel 3 series BMW for years, but with no long commutes, I struggle with the logic in purchasing one.

Another cool thing about BMWs in that part of the world, is you can still get them with RWD.
Up here in Canada, RWD is reserved only for M vehicles. Most everything else gets xDrive :(

If you take good care of the car the fuel pump will last just fine, but if it does fail it's expensive and it's driven off the timing chain which is sandwiched between the engine and transmission.
I've installed a disaster prevention kit which reroutes the fuel return and feed lines and adds a filter so if my pump dies it won't take the injectors with it.
I plan on running some 2 stroke oil or other additive.

Mine isn't Xdrive so no transfer case to break
 
The CP4 doesn’t really have any problems in Europe where diesel fuel has to meet a significantly higher specification for lubricity. That’s basically the reason they fail. Yes, the pistons in them are not pinned and can rotate and put the rollers in the wrong orientation so that they eat the cam, but that doesn’t seem to happen as long as friction in the pump is low enough.
I wouldn’t recommend 2 stroke oil for this. I personally would use either Archoil, Hot Shots Secret LX4/EDT, or Optilube.
 
Start saving money for timing chain job. Considering timing chain issues, use heavier, higher HTHS oils with LL04 like Motul X-Clean 5W40 GEN2 or Mobil 1 ESP 0W40 X4.
I was planning on running 15w40 valvoline synthetic diesel oil. It shouldn't plug the DPF because there isn't one. And even though it's the original timing chain the cam sensor offset still looks good in ISTA. A quality timing set is like $450, still better than a fuel pump for $1200.

In that case you can run LL01 like Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W40. If you want to stick to those truck oils, Mobil 1 Delvac 5W40.

If Valvoline, then Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme 5w-40 has HT/HS of 4.0cP (well, all HDEO's of -40 grade in general have higher hths that their PC cousins of the same viscosity and are shear stable).

I would not use 2-stroke oil in a modern diesel injection system. Funny interactions may occur with PIBSI and the diesel fuel additives leading to (accelerated) internal diesel injector deposit formation (in operation and during hot-soak after shutdown). Rather, use a dedicaded one or a diesel blend containing 2--5% BioDiesel to avoid lubr. issues (although this comes with oither penalties). A thing to avoid is using OTC additives of different manufacturers in the same vehicle. Both limits (<460micron HFRR score in Europe and <520 in US) are far from great...however,due to mandated FAME content the Euro diesel is way better now...while US results tend to hover around the 520micron).

I'm in Arizona so 15w isn't too thin. HTHS of 4.3 and it was on sale at Walmart.

Many people on the diesel truck forums are running tcw3 in their modern diesels with no issues, and there's nothing special about the bmw common rail system. It's still just a Bosch cp4 system like many of the light duty diesels have.
