Bought a 2011 Corolla, new.

Do you notice unusual throttle cut off behavior between 40 and 65 mph. My 2011 Corolla suddenly cuts off the throttle if I let the gas pedal come up only slightly and the rpms fall by 400-500. Feels like a mild jerky downshift but it is not. Throttle cut off lasts about 1-2 seconds and then engine speed goes up. I have read that this is due to the throttle cutting off to save gas when the driver lifts his foot but this jerking is annoying.
TSB 0124-11 gives instructions how to reflash the ecu to improve this jerking but have not had it done on mine. Also would like to know if the reflash would reduce gas mileage. Supposed to link to TSB but not working now.

Visit ToyotaNation there are a few threads on this subject. Gas mileage will reflect this adjustment.

The auto transmission in these cars is actually pretty good, in a lot of ways it almost mimics a manual by adjusting fuel delivery etc. So it feels like a manual when you let off the gas. Consequently the auto trans can match and sometimes best the manual in a lot of driving conditions. I have never noticed the jerky-ness some report. Perhaps they changed things in the ECU from the 2009-2010 & the 2011-current. I do feel the fuel cut off engage while decelerating but I love seeing the fuel economy shoot to infinite when it happens, it saves on braking energy and works to my benefit in slippery conditions. I wouldn't change a thing on mine.

The Camry is the same way, and I've noted before how much like a manual the car drives. I initially liked that, but then grew to dislike how clunky it was. Maybe the Corolla is different, or maybe my particular Camry was more clunky than others, but it became hard to drive it smooth in on-and-off throttle situations, and that was one of the reasons I eventually traded it. It became a chore to drive smoothly.

If you have driven both, I find this hard to believe anyone could actually believe that.

I had the TSB performed under warranty and it took the, what I referred to as, indecision whether to apply gas or not. I was a simple ECU flash. The car doesn't make me mad now when in traffic. Sorry you had to get rid of the car to get rid of this symptom.

I hope to God you stay in the right-most lane all the time...

Found your gas mileage log. Very complete.

My Corolla gets less but I drive differently. It does have sudden rpm drops between 40 and 65mph and delayed deceleration when lifting off gas pedal at the same speeds. TSB 0124-11 not applied yet. This odd behavior does not bother me that much yet so I am trying to find out if applying the TSB will change mileage.

After applying TSB 0124-11 did you your gas mileage change? When did you have the TSB applied so I can check it out on your mileage log. Thanks.

I had the TSB performed at the 10,000 mile Toyota Care Maintenance visit in early January. I believe I've gone (3) tanks and I haven't necessarily seen a decrease in MPG. I do wonder about MPG and the "old" ECM logic. I actually thought about it today when exiting the bypass. I let off the gas early and with the "old" logic, I feel the gas would be "cut off" whereas now it is not. But again, I haven't seen a big difference in MPG.
