Hi everyone.....I'm a newbie to the forums here and to the website in general. I have a question about the compatibility of synthetic motor oil and the Bosch Premium oil filters. I have a '99 Avalon that I just love, and I've been running Mobil 1 oil in it since I bought it 2 years ago. So, yesterday I picked up a jug of M 1 and a Bosch Premium filter, got them home and noticed that full synthetic oil was only listed as being compatible with the upper "tiers" of the Bosch filters, not the basic premium filter. Any ideas as to why this would be ? Is there any harm in running the full synthetic M 1 with the filter that I have purchased ? Thanks for any input you might have on this.

I used low end oil filters Fram Extra Guard and Pep Boy house brand in my LS400 for full year up to 16-18k miles without problem.

Bosch Premium oil filter is better than the two I used, so just use it without worrying.

If it makes you feel better buy Fram Ultra for next oil change.

In general, of the 2 filters air filter is much more importance than oil filter, it stops dust and harmful particles before they get into the engine. Oil filter stops those particles after it got into the engine.

Beats me but

Any filter will work fine with synthetic oil. Its only when you want to push the OCI beyond 7500 that you need the higher quality filters designed for extended OCIs.

Ahhh, yes. Now that makes sense to me. I wondered why a filter manufacturer would suggest not using their oil filter with synthetic oil, but just the idea of not letting it go that long between oil changes makes sense. Thanks !

Wondering from where that information was obtained? I don't see it on the Bosch website info, so be interested to know the source. As noted there's no inherent harm from running any filter with synthetic as opposed to convention. Now, it's possible there was a recommendation of using the next tier up Bosch Distance Plus for the longer oci/fci associated with synthetic oil. But that would be more about upselling than anything else.

The topic'd BP uses a silicone adbv same as BD+ and other extended oci filters. So while not the uppermost tier, ceratinly not the lowest either which use a nitrile adbv. So, agree with others saying the BP will work fine.

As an off topic aside with no intent to be condescending, it's a refreshing to read the reasonable replies in this thread. Perhaps change is in the air, for some at least.

You got it ... because if someone uses full synthetic oil, and decides to run the oil for 15K, a regular oil filter might not be up for that challenge. So typically the long duration oil filters are the full synthetic types (Ultra, M1, Royal Purple, etc) that can take a very long oil change interval without fear of clogging up. That's known as "high holding capacity".

Ah yes now understand, it's on the new silver box along side recommendations for their other filter offerings the Long Life and BD+. IIRC, the LL has never been seen here, but plenty of BD+ posted here.

As for the 'recommendations' for "motor oil technology" I'd consider them overly simplistic at best. Easy to understand the question because if one just reads the chart, it makes it appear that the BP is only good for use with conventional and semi synthetic oil. To put it mildly a silly premise but for the unenlightened, as noted an easy way to upsell to a more expensive filter.

The chart also shows the BP also rated ~14g holding capacity which is a bunch of particulates. Oil type aside, in a well maintained vehicle the BP should easily do 7500 miles or more.

I just picked up four of these from Rock Auto. $2.65 each (I bought other things as well, so shipping really wasn't a factor.) I have used the 3312 in my 2014 Kia Rio and 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe. They seem fine. I use NAPA 5W-20 Full Synthetic for 5,000 mile intervals in each.

I vote for this as well. I have used basic Federated (made by Hastings) oil filters for years with PP or M1 without issue or failures. As others have noted you should be good to go.
