Searching through the archives here on EP additives, etc for differential oil I ran across Chevron Delo Gear ESI. Sounds like it has a semi synthetic base (whatever that is) and some level of sulfur, but Boron is primarily used to achieve the high EP levels required these days. GL4 GL5. https://cglapps.chevron.com/msdspds/PDSDetailPage.aspx?docDataId=76979&docFormat=PDF

I was under the impression European car makers were using boron in their gear oils. Hard to find in US, unless you buy the manufacturer's special brew from a new car dealership. the Chevron boron EP oil is inexpensive, as I suspect the actual contents of the bottle from the Porsche dealer would be in a competitive market, where ingredients were listed, products analyzed, etc.

What is the general opinion, if there is any consensus, on Boron EP gear oils? Do they live up to the claims, at least by Chevron for the Delo EP? Are the two interchangeable if your car was originally filled with the typical sulfer EP oil?

I am just looking for general info or opinions about the whole Boron EP strategy. Other brands available? things like that. Thanks-

The additives in those gear oils consist of a primary EP additive of sulfur-phosphorus with a secondary EP additive of tri-potassium borate.

Very good oils in my opinion.

But there is more to a lubricant than just one type of chemistry.

I use the Chevron additive package in lots of industrial gear oils. In the sugar mills where a standard sulfur/phos EP package would only hold up 2500 hours (one-half season), the equivalent Borate gear oil (mostly from ISO 320 up through 680) go at least two seasons (10,000 hours), with less than 10% of the wear metals. When I replace the sulfur/phos oils in gear boxes with the borate ones we usually document the 10ºC temperature drop and 10% drop in amps drawn.

Only precaution is to keep the gear box dry, in humid climates use a good descant breather. In presence of water the additives drop out and you have a mess.

The Delo Gear ESI would be in my rear axle right now IF it weren't for the crazy LOW V.I. (like 80 or so).

Chevron Delo ESI has a very impressive list of certifications, few oils can compete with

According to the spec sheet, Vi for 80W-90 is 99, and 90 for 85W-140. M1 Delvac has 140 and 139. M1 Delvac has lower kV at 40C, and Delo ESI at 100C. I've been using both with success for a ton of miles in Panthers, Lexus LX, Escalades - open and LSD, as well as transfer cases. Excellent lubricants. Both can be procured at low prices from local distributors in my area.

Yes, granted they are very good gear oils, but are they that much better than the 183 V.I. Valvoline Syngear 75W-140, sitting right on the shelf at every auto parts chain store, and on sale at multiple times of the year??

Just how much does the boron based EP additive do?
