Borla or Magnaflow?

I'm starting to agree with you. The general consensus appears to be Borla in this thread. A lot of the guys just straight pipe the back and keep the resonator setup. That's a little too redneck for my taste.

I'd like it a little bit louder than it is.

As most others have stated (sound notwithstanding) between the two you are deciding between; Borla.

Magnaflow does not make ANY full systems completely out of 304 austenitic stainless steel (they are MOSTLY 409 stainless).
I don't think that they even make ANY mufflers anymore (the C5/6 Vette systems maybe???) out of 304.

The Borla in 304 WILL live MUCH longer (like life of the car long), especially on a ride you plan on having for a L-O-N-G time (as I take for granted is the case with your M5

).

Talk to other M5 owners with these systems and find out if any of them have a nasty drone to them, as that's something that will drive you nutty if you do a lot of highway trips. I've found with a lot of aftermarket exhausts that they tend to have a drone at certain rpm and it can definitely get on your nerves! The SLP catback on my 95 Firebird Formula was like that, it sounded amazing at idle and at WOT, but on the highway at 110-120km/h it droned like crazy!

It wasn't a 'Loud Mouth' was it?? (Were they even out back when you owned the LT1 Formy?)

Created a thread. Got no feedback. however research on the board indicates that you only get drone if you remove the resonators. There are guys running full straight-piped setups that are definitely not my cup of tea (I'm thinking that is borderline obscenely loud) and say they have a lot of drone. Others who kept the resonators do not. I assume that is why all the aftermarket kits keep the resonators.

Well, the Borla is only a tiny bit more money. But has a lot more piping. And twice the number of mufflers (looks a lot like the OEM kit, which may not be a bad thing). Hmmmmmm decisions decisions.... LOL!

Because I don't want to damage the stock exhaust. These kits bolt on to the stock flanges. I can remove and store the stock exhaust and easily put it back on if necessary or desired.

The stock exhaust is fully stainless and is in perfect condition.

I would be inclined to keep it stock because the car is so well engineered as a system, and part of the cars allure is that it is quiet - but you can still hear the V8 rumble.

That being said, I prefer Borla and have used them on every V8 truck I have owned and would recommend them in an instant.

I owned that LT1 Formula after my 98, so it was from 2001 to 2004 that I had it, and I think the Loudmouth was out, but the one I had was the 2OTL system.

Those M5s are nice! I like the sound of the Borla. The Magnaflow sounds nice too but the company's name reminds me of tampon commercials.

Borla is nicer since its quieter. Are you trying to make the car noisy or does it actually do something to the power curve?

My previous car(WRX) it would create a substantial power increase replacing the exhaust(227HP->286HP) but the noise was obnoxious for a daily driver. I just could not do it after borrowing a friends WRX. It gets old but maybe this is not your daily driver.

I have to say though in city tunnels with windows down the noise was incredible from a little subaru boxer motor.

I love the sound of your M5 stock personally.

I just want it a little louder when I am on it. That's the way the Expedition is. Only loud when I am on the gas hard. Otherwise, it is factory quiet. I'd like the same with the M5. I just like to hear the sound of a nice exhaust note when an engine is being exercised. And while the stock system is probably the loudest stock exhaust on any vehicle I've ever owned, it is still quite muted compared to how I like to have them.

I'm still up in the air about it however.

BTW, I doubt there is any power increase from the exhaust. It has large diameter factory duals. And yes, the car is daily driven as much as I can. I enjoy driving it immensely.

On cars like this its just for sound, the stock systems are so good they don't really restrict power.

That's why tuning German cars costs a fortune.

Exactly. And why stuff from guys like Dinan costs a fortune.

I like loudmouth 2 better. My neighbor really hate me, cause I warm up my car every morning ^^ I only like put exhault system on a v8, any other I leave it stock.

from those video, I like the magnaflow.
