I have a set of extractors similar to what you're describing. If you know what a buttress thread is (or just google it), imagine a single large thread sticking out from each of the flats on the six-point socket. It digs into the nut and will not allow it to slip once it's on. Pretty much ruins the nut, but it's going to be replaced if you get to the point of needing to use the socket anyway.
I bought mine at work and haven't seen the exact same product advertised anywhere else. Problem is, the company that brought them in, discontinued them or I'd let you know where to get a set since they work pretty well.
That sounds a lot like the Craftsman Bolt-Out kit. I use the impact version but I know others who use the regular kit and still take an impact tool to it because it has a lifetime warranty. I just don't like to screw over a company that offers a lifetime warranty in good faith.
