boiler keeps needing resetting

A slightly loose fitting at the burner feed can cause air entrainment, but i think you would see it weeping. Maybe you had some brown outs causing tripping -t was windy (at least down here in So. NH) My 0ld analogue (Honeywell) electric units arent affected by momentary interrupts - they'll just restart if there is a call for heat or water temp is at the low point cut-in.

It was a clogged filter. All clean now. Fixed while I was at work so I didn't get to see the guy do it.

Got a cash discount though.

I'm bumping this since the same thing happened to me today. Being a dedicated BITOG type guy, I abandoned the standard fuel oil filter a few seasons ago and installed a dual Permacool setup with some WIX 33281 filters that are 3/4-16 thread. I went to NAPA on a Saturday and they didn't have them in stock (they used to) and he quoted me list of $17.xx each. I really think that they have different prices when the trade isn't paying the bills. I can walk in there during the week and get decent prices ..on the weekend ..nope.

Anyway, I ordered them from Fleetfilter for under 10 bucks each ..but they haven't arrived yet.

So ..a ST3600 is on one of the filter positions until they arrive. I think I'll be okay until the 10um filters arrive. For all I know ..they finally filled up with water. The filters (this particular 3/4-16 thread diesel fuel filter) doesn't have a water tap.

Dont understand, I thought the system was just serviced before winter.

quote from post#1:
" ... Boiler was cleaned/serviced last fall by the guy who put it in, a likeable redneck. New filter, cleaning, etc, whatever they do. I also have some wood heat so it gets lighter use."

Maybe "last Fall" means a year ago - or the last time you fell on the ice

Agree with Gary that the "sponge bob" depth media poly filters just keep out low flying birds. Maybe OK for stage 1 of a two stage setup on a advanced system. I dont know what micron sieve you can run at stage 2 on a gravity feed and avoid cavitating the pump.

I really wanted to setup the burner for recirculation back to the tank. The taps are there. I would then put a Motor Guard or a real high(er) density cotton wound filter that would basically be a brick wall to flow at the return intlt to the tank. It really wouldn't reduce system reliability in that configuration- since it could go totally dead and not effect flow to the burner. That way the bulk fuel would be cleaned as you go. Not as high performance as a series of inline filters that get progressively finer, but eventually should clean out any longer term formations that may be in the tank.

There's availability of finer filters. They should last a long time @ 800-1000 gallons a year, but finding the heads for them at a decent price (my limit is SALVAGE) is the problem. It's not like you have more than the swapping of a nozzle to fix stuff right.
