Guys, thanks again for all of the support. The Motorcraft FL820S is a Ford/Mazda Filter, it is used on the following vehicles:

Ford/Lincoln/Mercury/Mazda -
2.5V6 - Mercury Mystique, Mazda MPV, Ford Countour
Mercury Cougar
3.0V6 - Mazda MPV, Mazda 6, Mazda Tribute
4.0V6 - Ford Explorer, Mercury Mountaineer,
Mazda B4000, Ford Ranger
4.6V8 - Ford F Series, Ford Mustang, Ford Crown
Vic, Mercury Grand Marquis, Mercury
Marauder, Ford Expedition, Ford Excursion
Lincoln Navigator
5.0V8 - Rare, but in some Mercury Mountaineers
5.4V8 - Ford F Series, Ford Excursion, Ford
Expedition
6.8V10 - Ford F Series, Ford Excursion

I appreciate everyone's offers of money and filters. I would rather pay for it all myself, just in case I start this thing and it never goes anywhere. I don't want angry oil fanatics after me

. What I really need is people to help with taking the pictures, taking measurements and charting the data. Rick has offered to set up the page after we have finished everything. I am planning on purchasing all of the filters(which I estimate to be around $120) and paying for any shipping costs or materials needed for the project. Unfortunately, I simply do not have the time or a good enough digital camera to do it all myself. Just let me know if anyone else is interested in helping. Thanks again for everyone's support and enthusiasm

Pennzoil filters are Fram, Prolines are Purolator, and Defence are Fram, so he didn't leave them out. They are exact clones

i know they are all the same but since he also put stp/supertech and wix/napa gold oil filters on the list, i thought that he was just going to evaluate all filters even though some are exactly the same.

Joe,

Ed told me about this and since I don't live that far from you, approx 100 miles, I'll be more than happy to drive up and take some pics and help out with getting it on the site.

As you know, I'm always into doing little stuff like this and it's really great to see how well everyone is willing to help.

Myself, I'm interested in flow, as it appears many companies are not providing the info on that, but as you well pointed out, that construction of some of the newer filters would be of some value to many.

Get with me and we can set a day or two on working on this project at your place when you're ready for the pics and such.

I think that Purolator makes oil filters of at least three quality levels--
Pure One,
Premium,
Sureflow, V-1,
and now where does Proline fit in? (probably third tier, but just guessing).

Harddriver is made by Donaldson and they did a terrible job of marketing them. That is a filter of choice for me, pure glass fiber, almost never bypass's , flows like a screen door on a submarine , and very well constructed.

If you can get this or another glass media donaldson for your vehicle at a reasonable price do it !

I would love to help with this study. I have a digital camera and would be willing to take pictures. I have never cut open filters but could with some instruction. I am especially interested in seeing a comparison of the mobil1 to the supertech.

FWIW - please consider including oem filters that are made specifically for them, such as Nissan filters. If an oem is made by a major aftermarket manufacturer, and identical to the aftermarket version - say a Fram made for Honda - then it would be helpful to include that info. as it becomes known, or available.

Thanks!
-Doug-

these filters appear to be hard drivers.... look at the picture, it says hard driver... for 20 dollars a pop it seems ok! they even advocate using it like 50k miles or something... part of the "lube 4 life" program they have going on.

Thats the donaldson filter. Made for what used to be hardriver.

I like this filter but I can't ever find one at a price I will pay.

$20 Anyone tried them? Judging by their claims it's worth it. I'd buy a cheap filter only if it was going to be on a rather short time (Auto-RX-ing, etc) Like if it's not twice the price of an el cheapo, you have to wonder what you're getting. I have spent hours reading & trying to find what to get for my Elantra. I thought of posting "what would be best for my Elantra" but poor Mystic asked that about his Saturn & he only got one reply.
You can help Mystic at:

More will follow...
Oh, and

but thanks to the gang at Auto-RX, I'll be parting with about $200 CDN for Auto-RX, and I'm actually happy about it!

I've got about a dozen cut up on my site. Don't have the equipment to test flow and filter efficiency.
One of the problems is in "equivalent filters". Different sizes for different vehicles. I have to use a couple of brands for certian sizes because they are the only ones who make that size and they don't make the PH-8A that I used for a standard.
My analysis of the FRAM was not only bad for the cardboard ends, but the cardboard was not centered over the perforated tube, so the valve assembly actually sat on the perforated tube without a seal.
This week I saw a Silverado 6.2 L where for the previous change they had put on an "identical" filter (but without the drain-back valve), so (mounted sideways) it made a lot of noise each time the engine was started.

Terry,

Is the Synlube filter the same filter as the Donaldson Hard Driver you have talked about before? If it is the same filter, then is there any other place to get this filter from Donaldson rather than from Synlube (maybe for a better price than $20)?

From what's on their website, my guess is that yes, it's the same Hard Driver filter Terry has mentioned. The only source I know of for it is the website, price ~$20/each.

It sure looks like a great filter, but is it worth 4-5 times the price of a Wix, 10 times the price of a WM ST, etc? I suspect each of us will have to answer that question for ourselves.

If you should find a less expensive source for those filters, please post on the boards here. Lots of us would be interested, I'm sure. I've even considered paying the full $20 for one- a year ago, who'd have thought it?

kalbri, the harddriver is the exact same as the donaldson endurance filter line. Donaldson has little marketing capability to the passenger car arena so they outsourced it to harddriver marketing company. I don't know if donaldson still makes the car filters but they do for HD trucks equipement etc.

The syntorq media = synteq at least in 1997 when we tested the products. It is a great media.
