BMW---Yearly oil changes

A franchise owner of mine has a boyfriend who has a BMW and he was told that by his dealer. (Yearly or 24,000 KM) and he says that he doesn't trust that and will be doing them every 6 months at most...

First of all it would depend on what type of operation your car sees [does the oil get hot enough on a regular basis to evaporate the water etc in the oil]. Also if it is a lease which many BMWs are it doesn't matter at all then [good enough for BMW god enough for the lessee].
Friend ahs a Porsche Boxster...same thing. Dealer uses Mobil 1 EP and refuses to change it more often. Car is at least six years pld and runs like a top. Gets driven about 15,000 miles/year.
Synthetic oil requirements with a big sump... Just wish it came with a dipstick.

BMW oil is made by Castrol to their own specs. it is synthetic, most likely 5w30, the M cars require 10w60.

Can't get better oil than one made custom for your type of engine... I still wouldn't run it that long... Just don't trust it!

Porsche boxter engine has a huge sump, combined with Mobil 1 or similar, they can go for 1yr+ easily without the need of oil change.
Anything gets changed out in 6mnths or less (unless that car covered a lot of mileage) would be an utter waste of resource/arrogant act.

Here's and interesting thread on a BMW going well over 1 year and 10k miles on oil changes. Over 10k miles is generally a little longer than I would be willing to go (I would probably change out ~ 8K miles, but his results look ok.

On the newer models equipped with CBS, the cars will go up to TWO years or the recommended interval between oil changes.
BMW uses their High Performance Synthetic 5W30 at the dealership, but here's a list of their approved oils:

All BMWs, except for the MINI Coopers (they hold 5 quarts and follow the same intervals), have at least a 7 quart sump.
