im pretty sure any old timers that see those pics may be thinking "Musta been that thar old Penzoil that sludges engines, I bet"

hahah

This would be an amazing BITOG test for ARX! Snap these pictures ... put humpty-dumpty back together. Finally, an oil change with high quality mineral oil (or XHVI PP) and run 2 complete cycles of ARX. I am talking about 4 oil changes. Arguably the 1st oil change would be less than 3k....and gradually increase each interval. Afterwards, we partially disassemble and reshoot pics. If we really wanted to be subjective we could have weighed the oil pan (compared to an clean original) to derive the weight of the sludge.

If that would does not end being doubting the existence of legitimate non solvent engine cleaners I do not know what will. Of course ARX may not make the block look hot tanked or liquid salt cleaned

Finally, is it propable that in this type of engine the owner could have been innocent. In other words a hard to detect mechanical condition or sludge monster factory engineering (akin to older Toyotas)? Thanks

Let's imagine that ARX works perfectly and all that sludge goes away. Where would it go? To the filter? The photos show all that sludge that the tech put in a Tupperware container.
You'd be changing that filter every 100 miles ARX conditions were ideal.
I wouldn't own this car if it was given to me.

I'm wondering if several 15 minute flushes with about a case of oil filters would clean some of that mess up?

What a waste of a nice car!

I would own it !! I think it's way overblown, sure it looks bad, but notice the sludge is heavy in places with little oil flow. I would do a few short oil changes, then I think I would just use a decent midline synthetic like PP, Mobil etc. I would not doctor it hard with engine flushes for fear of breaking anything loose. I would almost bet that the engine internals are still in great shape as far as wear.

Not sure what I would do with that engine..if you went with a synthetic like PP...sooner or later you are going to get a clog somewhere and grenade something. But I would definitely use a high detergent oil and change the filter every 1-2000 miles for the first 10,000 miles and cut them open to see what is coming out. No doubt the oil pan is full of gunk as well.

You'd be surprised how honest all of the above parties get when they are dealing with information that can easily be checked by third parties.

The oil filter in this engine is simple to pull out, and it's just the cartridge so you can easily monitor the filter in about one minute from on top of the engine to boot. If you look at the very first picture, it's seen right in between the power steering reservoir and the front of the cylider head. and it has a big (32mm) hex on top.

This engine would definitely be worth trying your suggestion of multiple low mileage oil and filter changes.

I had a look around on BITOG, and didn't see this posted. forgive me if it has been.

Anyhow, this is NOT my car and I do not know the people involved. This thing has gone 60,000miles without any filter or oil changes. sounds like this all started with a malfunctioning vanos...and I think it's clear to see why it wasn't working!

They have removed a lot of sludge by hand, and intend to run a couple cycles of autoRX through it. I wonder if it's up to the task??

Fingers crossed oil passeges aren't plugged while cleaning..

How in the world was that motor functioning like that?

Probably leases a new Car every 3 years and couldn't give a hoot about maintenance.

Yep. I think car manufacturers, knowing that leased cars will not be maintained, offer free oil changes and other basic maintenance so that the cars will last and have some resale value after they come off a lease. Also explains why new cars come with synth oil, in case the owner decides to skimp on oil changes, the car will have the best chance of survival.

Not uncommon on BMW forums or for BMW stealerships or indy shops. Incorrect oil particularly in the U.S where any old 5W30 gets used gives results like this. Currently 2 3/4 bottles RX in my BMW engine, I'll guarantee it doesn't look like that.

Good observation. The owner is a moron.
