Well, as the title states, looks like BMW is dropping Shell/Pennzoil and returning to Castrol as of February. Saw the parts bulletin at work. Will try and find a copy of the bulletin and post here.

Meh. Any brand recommendation is just that, a recommendation. As has always been the case the approval is what matters.
I guess Castrol coughed up more dough than Shell/Penzoil
Moreover, it's a business contract... as Pelican said

Because Pennzoil sucks probably more BMW’s burning crazy amounts of oil . That why I went back to Mobil 1 no more burning for me.
Looks like Castrol was the lowest bidder this time around.

I don’t mind I prefer Castrol though I won’t ever own a BMW so no need to worry anyway and both are good oils.
I remember when Ford's were sold in the early 2000's with gas caps that said "Ford Recommends BP Fuel"
I wouldn't go that far but in a way you make a valid point. Some users report higher than usual oil consumption, nothing against the brand and I have no answers or theories just questions.

I was going through 1/4 of a quart of PP Euro 5W40 in 1,000 miles. No consumption so far with M1 0W40 and I did track day where I sent engine into limp mode due to high oil temperature (90 degrees + high altitude are really bad combo when one does not have oil cooler).

I do not think it is lowes bidder or anything like that. Probably involves other deals like race sponsorships, mutual developments etc. These things are never one way street.
Castrol just lost VW / Audi so this will be good for their image.
