Again, my older 5spd manual 530i calls for MTF-LT-2 fluid which according to Redline's chart is a D4 ATF Aka Dex III visc. My newer 335i 6spd manual calls for MTF-LT-3, which according to redline take a D6 ATF Aka Dex VI visc. I use OEM BMW trans fluids. Possible to use the newer thinner LT-3 fluid in my older transmission? I'd be able to stock only 1 transmission fluid for both my bimmers and maybe pickup some power and MPG's at the same time.

If it is purely just a viscosity retention and shear stability thing like dex VI vs III is in GM ATs, Id say yes. However, Id be concerned as last I checked, Dex VI-like ATFs do not hold approvals for use in MTs, and so Id be concerned about some incompatible chemistry.

I have seen some folks over on 1addicts using D4 and D6 in their MTs. Ill probably be using the OE fluid when I change mine.

If it was me, I'd use the specified fluid - it's not like you're changing it all the time. It would be nice to be able to stick with just one, but there's no way to know if the friction qualities of LT2 and LT3 are compatible with each other, even if the differing viscosities are not an issue.

^ Agreed. Figured I'd ask if a ton of BMW guys were doing the LT-3 where Lt-2 was called for and I just missed the boat. Guess not. I am using LT-3 BMW fluid in my 335i and I'll bite the bullet and order a jug of LT-2 BMW fluid for my 5psd 530i.

^ Thanks for the heads up. That's much cheaper than buying a 5L jug of BMW fluid when it's probably the same stuff. This way I can just buy 2 or 3 bottles of the Pent for $21/ea. $60 vs $150. I'm going that route. Car is 10yrs old with 102k. Granted I'm the 2nd owner, accident free and it's my daily driver (work vehicle) and want it nice, but new LT-2 Pent is still better than 10yr old 102k OEM fluid! Decision is made.
