BMW steering wheel offers a race timer, g-force meter for every turn

German luxury automakers have slowly been turning their vehicles into computers on wheels over the past few years, putting a plethora of buttons and screens never more than a few inches away from a driver or passenger. Yet there's still unexplored frontiers, as BMW has revealed with a steering wheel that keeps track of your fuel efficiency, lap times and even tells drivers when to shift. It's like having a mini race engineer sitting on the rim -- although his services don't come cheap.

Available as a dealer-installed option on several BMW M and traditional models, the $1,600 BMW M Performance Steering Wheel comes wrapped in Alcantara suede for that fractional improvement in grip that true drivers crave. The screen at the top of the wheel can be set to three modes; one to measure efficiency, a Sport mode that tracks lap times and holds a g-meter to measure the forces in turns, and a Race mode with more extensive timing and acceleration measures, such as how long it takes to reach 62 mph.

On either side of the screen lie a row of LEDs that flash green and red to suggest optimal shifting points for the wannabe racer. It's one of those innovations that sounds silly at first, but offers some usability the more you see it in action. And yet $1,600 buys a lot of accelerometers, stopwatches and gasoline. You can see the wheel in action below:

So basically they are copying Ferrari with their silly F1 inspired wheel, with a million buttons on it, and turn signals that are a PITA, *cough* 458 I'm looking at you...

Which is why Aston Martin or Maserati are a better buy, they make proper GT cars for the people who don't want to pretend to have an F1 car for the road. Those of us who just want a nice fast GT car and have no illusions of F1 glory.

BMW is very guilty of this lately, the last M5 was way to complicated with way to many settings. My attitude on the whole thing is I'm paying BMW M to set up a car, and a lot of money to do it, so why do I need 50 interior light settings, or 5 suspension settings? Whats the $90k getting me? BMW should figure that all out at the factory and deliver a finished product. Like the old M5... I don't want to play Gran Turismo in real life, I want BMW to set up the car the way it should be. Which back to Aston Martin...they do that.

If you look at the interior of a Honda S2000 you will not see many buttons/knobs/switches ...

The only thing on the steering wheel is the cruise control like in every other Honda.

Few controls, stereo and H/AC are on either pod behind the steering wheel.

The car was engineered to drive not to play with buttons/switches.

The way it should be. Ive grown tired of all the bells and whistles cars come with now. Just something to break five years down the road. I got the chance to drive a friends S2000 and fell in love with it, I don't even like convertibles either.

I agree with this sentiment, but even my 135i convertible was set up this way. I think often the dealer lot configured cars have more excessive junk.

Take a peek at another real (ultra) performance Honda, the Acura NSX for a great interior for the driver.

I agree with JHZR2. No need for a silly gimmick buttons on a steering wheel. Why are companies trying to get the driver's attention OFF the road ???

Thankfully BMW still lets you order a nice base car minus all the junk. I built a wonderful 2013 5 series online, and am so tempted...

550I, Rwd, 6spd manual, only option the M suspension package. That's it, I don't want the [censored]!

Ditto; I've configured an M Sport 328i manual coupe with just heated seats and H-K sound. Manual seats, inline six, no turbo, and no hole in the roof.
Perfect- and tempting...

This is why I prefer the simple and straight forward look and function of my E46 with the performance package...It gets the 3 spoke regular 'M' leather wrapped steering wheel without any gimmicks...

And that is why I search listings for these more than other 3-series. I want one with the alcantara wheel though. Speak of the devil...I just found one listed nearby. Too bad I don't have room for a weekend car at the moment. It would be cruel to buy a ZHP and put 23-24k miles on it in a year.
