I agree with most of the posts here...I just changed my new (to me) 2004 530i coolant at 82,000 miles and 4 years and it was OK, but a little gunky so I think it was good that I flushed it. I'll probaly flush once every two years into the future.
As far as checking pH, that is actually prtty easy, go to a pool store (or even Wally world) and get a simple pool water test kit. You can either get the old traditional style where you take a sample and add a few drops of a chemical in therre and read the color. Or now they sell pH test strips that you just dip in the water (or coolant) and read the color of the test dot.
