i am trying to trace leak on my 02 e46 330i. i get a pretty good sized pool . it seems to be coming from between the trans and the engine. the issue is i can't tell if its motor oil or ATF. What color is BMW ATF? is it red like most or another color?

Doesn't that BMW use LT711 whatever? I heard that some of that LT7 ATF isn't dyed red like ATF usually is.

Have you checked the oil level and ATF level? Which one is low? Does the transmission jerk or anything?

Sounds like you don't have any extra BMW ATF. I would bring both oil and ATF up to a full level and put a piece of cardboard underneath the car to locate where are it's leaking from.

How much is leaking (doesn't sound like a small drip)? Also check your power steering reservoir, some times those start to leak around the hoses.

When getting under the car I would see if the bolts for the oil pan and transmission pan are loose.

The BMW/VW stuff is clear yellowish-green in the bottle. Unless that car uses a GM or Aisin unit which would be traditional red.
