My buddies 525 I first changed it with M1..he went 7k on that oil. I just changed it yesterday for him and put GC in there.....he said he felt the M1 was a little peppier.. Is this a placebo effect?

However, on the general sentiment, I agree.

I also would probably run Mobil 1 0w-40 over GC, all else equal.

If nothing else, you can get Mobil 1 0w-40 for $5/qt. There's nothing that comes close to that kind of value.

Yeah I snatched 21 qts @ $2.50 per! Just really wondering if what he is feeling in the car is that GC is more shear stable throughout the life of the oil and I know that M1 shears down to a 30 over time.

Only the SM version sheared though really. The SN version has proven to be much more shear stable in applications that the SM version sheared. I mention the application part because there were numerous ones that the SM version didn't shear in. My 5.4L Ford would be an example of that.

I recall nearly 10 years ago talking about M1 0w-40, and how it shears and then oxidative lay thickens. Doubt it was just the SM, but good if they've made it more consistent!

There is a was to tell or at least confirm in part and that is with an OP/OT gauge.
On paper M1 is lighter on start-up than GC and that's what tends to influence my impressions of an oil if it's reflected in lower OP on start-up. It's been a few years since I have run both oils but I can't remember either one standing out as being all that noticeably different from each other.

What I was saying was that there's no way to tell without any data. Your approach provides data, so my and Kuato's criticism wouldn't apply.

Yup. Whatever they did in the SN version seems to be working. My recent 11K miles UOA from the wife's C300 confirms it. Unless of course it sheared first, and then thickened back up....

Not a placebo effect. I own a 2002 530i, MT. Every oil I have tried feels somewhat different; the engine sound is also different. Engine responsiveness from my butt dyno correlates inversely with viscosity as one might expect.
Other vehicles we have, I cannot appreciate near as much as in this engine. I also think that driving a car with MT contributes to this effect.

You've got the exact same car as mine.

Just curious, which oils have you tried in it so far and which one did you like best?

I've used GC as well as PU 5w-40 in mine, and to be honest, my butt dyno does not detect any difference.

Tried a variety:
GC--quietest idle, but engine "screamed" at 4K rpm
Mobil1 OW40--quiet idle, very smooth, but didn't like it in the winter (15 degree highs, 0 degree lows last Jan in Boise, that was an atypical winter month)
Chevron Supreme Synthetic 5W40--thickest oil I have tried. Quiet idle, engine felt the least responsive
QSUD 5W30--trying this as an experiment over the winter. Yes, does not meet the BMW spec. but engine is now fun!! Quiet idle, but a bit more engine noise, but does not bother me.

For the majority of the time, I have used the Mobil OW40--very smooth and very nice in the heat of the summer.

Define Screaming vs the others?
