Block test -- combustion gases

I was recently playing around with an EJ25 (so we all know the outcome) but thought I'd point out the block testers are kinda difficult to read -- or at least it was for me.

Also, I realize the accuracy of these is questionable and even hotly debated in some circles. If you want a hot debate....well, I don't care that much.

Take note of how the fluid begins:

I swore I saw the fluid become lighter during the test, but it still has a light blue hue to the eye. It's supposed to turn yellow if positive. I found using a light helped to show contrast to the naked eye.

I'm gonna call this positive for combustion gases:

There are other things to back up my finding, although I didn't bother with a leak down. Basically I personally wouldn't rely solely on this, but used it as a sanity check to confirm my conclusion based on other things.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you. Positive test.
Don't feel bad, not my vehicle! I can't touch it for a month. It'll be my first time doing boxer HGs and I'll have lots of questions in the next few weeks as I compile parts :)

I know WatchWesWork had a diesel where the fluid wouldn't turn colors at all, he was using the diesel-specific fluid and nothing.

Yeah I remember that one, which is why I don't think they're the final word.

In his case he got a false negative. I'm not sure if they can also have false positives.

I read some are not for diesel engines and the test can be corrupted if even a small amount of coolant is drawn into the fluid.
These test are definitely not the be all and end all but if one changes color it is a pretty sure bet combustion gases are entering the cooling system.

My sympathies, at least the engine is easy to remove and reseal nearly everything on a hoist/stand.

Also if this test is ambiguous, the engine and heads are salvageable.

I'll get to use my new HF gear driven engine stand. I can be like I Do Cars!

"It's fine"
