Does anyone use a block heater for conditions that are not subzero? Like an external type that connects to the heater hose.

I would use just to preheat for comfort and to save gas and emissions and wear and tear. I was thinking of it for a daily driver car. One that does not drive far in the morning.

Nope, in fact I haven't had a block heater in any of my vehicles for 25 years. Even when I lived in No Central Wis. I had no issues, I just used the proper syn oil and away I went.

folks in the fuel economy forum i frequent have noted higher fuel economy from using a heater in non-subzero conditions... however, they have not yet correlated electricity use to lower fuel usage.

I have the standard frost plug type heater (on both vehicles) and since my van is parked outside year 'round I plug it in when it gets below +25F. I only drive 6-7 miles one way to work and I feel it's less wear and tear with the block warmed a bit even though I use syn 5w30.

This is a case where I could justify the expense.

I installed a block heater in my 2002 Envoy over a year ago(4.2l I6) and love it. I have it on a timer that comes on at 4am and stops at 8am- I leave for work at 8:15 and have heat instantly. When using the block heater, my MPG goes up about 3mpg in the winter (I have the Driver Info. Center). My electric bill doesnt have a noticeable change.

I had one on a bigger block engine that was stock and used it when you're using yours (~0F or below) and liked how quickly the engine warmed up.

I can see it's use in some applications, but it's not for everyone that lives in the colder environments.
