Blizzaks on the Mustang!

Mahzurrah!
In August I purchased a new set of Continental Extreme Contact DW06 plus for the Mustang. We got our first snow December 1st. Four blocks and ten minutes of sheer terror later I learned that they were near useless in snow, at least on my car. I made it back home and parked it, quivering from my near death experience. Very disappointed. I got around quite well on my OEM Goodyears, although I had come to despise those for other reasons.

That left me in a quandary since the Mustang is a daily year round driver. Disgusted I was painted in a corner, I went all in and plunked down for a new set of Blizzak WS90s. I’ve never had to purchase snow tires ever, I was definitely out of my comfort zone, but I saw Blizzaks constantly mentioned in snow tire threads so I figured they must be a safe bet. 🤷

Also looked at Continental VC7s but honestly a bit ticked at Continental right now so I passed.

Never owned snow tires, never owned Bridgestone either. What say you, did I do okay? These gonna work? Yeah I’m that guy who already bought them then asked. 😛

Any tips for driving on snows for a newb?

Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.

When switching lanes where there's snow/slush in-between lanes and tire tracks make sure you take your time and do it smooth.

Snow tires are awesome and the blizzaks are awesome in deep snow. They do give a really strong sense of superiority though. Next time it snows go into a parking lot or around some wide neighborhood roads with no cars parked on the street so you know what it feels like when they start breaking traction.

x2 turning off TC.

Watch out for the bro trucks that fly by on all-terrains and end up in the ditch. My last winter roadtrip through CO, the only vehicles in the ditches were those.

Some weight in the trunk might help. Get it as close to the rear seat as possible. Maybe even build a brace out of some 2x4 to keep the ballast from sliding around. 50lb sand bags are the de facto choice.

This. When I owned my mustang I would go to a grocery store and buy six big clean bags of water softener salt and put them over the rear axle and tape the receipt to the top one. In the spring I would take them back and get my money back lol.
I always Tread lightly on that throttle as the 5.0 would still be able to make things sketchy

Your vehicle is now glued to the road.

Blizzaks are fantastic winter tires, but ya gotta run a set of 4. If you only put then on the front the back will break loose and try to pass the rest of the vehicle when you brake.

If you dont take the Bluzzaks off when the weather warns up, and you run them in summer temperatures, there wont be enough of them left next winter for them to be worth using. A mechanic friend said Blizzaks have bubblegum rubber. Just too soft for summer temperatures.

Michelin is releasing the CrossClimate 3 Sport, that yt videos show to be a fantastic all season sport tire. But they may not be available in most sizes yet.

So, for a winter tires, you SCORED big time.

But next set get the CC3 Sport

Oh yeah, I got 4. 👍

A RWD Mustang is the last vehicle I would take out in the snow. However if that is what you have to work with definitely get some weight in the back, pack a shovel and sand, and take it slow…

It actually does quite well with decent tires. Way better than I expected. But I missed it on my last tire purchase for year round use. 😕

The whole thing is rather annoying as our weather normally skirts the expense and hassle of snow tires but I hope to feel vindicated when it actually snows.

Yay glad to see cars like that get driven in the winter on winter tires

I agree! When I bought it I was determined that it would be a daily driver year round. This is its third winter but the first off the OEM tires, which did surprisingly well in snow, especially the first year.

My uncle had a Corvette he drove year round also. A guy drove his Lamborghini to work on the 3rd, two days after the first snow, roads were plowed but not clear. Now that was impressive!

Great choice! It will drive like normal just with less grip. Don't turn anything on or off drive it first. When you get used to it go Hoon around empty parking lots like Ken Block!!

I put 4 Blizzaks on a 2wd Blazer SS back in PA and it did great and was a hoot to drift!

I don't even try DWS06 on snow. They are UHP tire. Very good for my climate, where we have 3 months of summer and then spring and fall, where the temperature fluctuates between 90 and 0. So, they are good in cold, dry, wet. But snow? UHP is UHP. There is no going around that.
I have Blizzak WS90 on BMW (not currently on as bcs. baby I am skipping the first half of ski season), WS90 on Tiguan (on currently), and VC7 on Sequoia.
Blizzak is an exceptional tire in snow and ice, and it does remarkably well in wet conditions for a tire that has such good ice performance. But, IMO, they ain't VC7. VC7 is just an overall better tire. It is more civilized, has better behavior in dry conditions, and definitely does not wear out as fast as Blizzak WS90.
Both are top-of-the-line tires, but having VC7 on Sequoia, having VC7 on BMW before WS90, I would give a slight advantage to VC7.
Continental is an absolute behemoth when it comes to winter tires and the #1 winter tire seller in the world.
That being said, WS90 is an impressive tire, especially in the wet (for a winter tire). And I have it on two vehicles for a reason.

Back when I had an 06 300 it came with Goodyear aqua treads first snow fall with just enough to cover the road it would not make it up the slight uphill grade at a stop light it just sat there will the rear wheels turning.
luckily this was at 4:30 in the morning so no traffic fuming mad I backed up and went home and I got my wife's car.
Needless to say four Michelin x-ice winters went on ! made an unbelievable difference never had an issue after that.

Not sure why you're mad at the Connies.

DW = Dry Wet = Summer Performance Tires
DWS = Dry Wet Snow = All Season Performance tires

The latter are the ones you would have wanted to buy if you wanted snow performance.
You should have known not to use the DW in the snow.

But, the WS90's are fantastic in the snow.
Not a performance biased snow tire, but they will get you where you need to go, all the time.

Bladecutter...I think KCJeep just left the "S" off as I have never heard of Continental DW06 plus but Continental does make the DWS06 Plus...
