I think I saw Curley do this same scene on an old 3 Stooges segment!

02zx9r, Just curious, does your drain pan leak from that big top lid, or from the smaller drain cap? Mine leaks from the large cap on top because it won't get fully tight. I actually really like the pan, and I like the grate to catch the drain plug if I happen to drop it and set the oil filter on top of it to let it drain while it catches the oil, but the only problem is the lid area to catch the oil is fairly small. I always have to keep moving the pan while it drains until it finally starts to drip downwards rather than flow diagonally. Also, when you set the oil filter on it like I like to do, it doesn't leave much room for the oil to drain into... but I guess I could just let it drain on top of the filter.

I don't actually use the pans for transportation I just don't like them leaking all over the garage between usage.

it does leak occasionally from the big lid but again i just set an old tshirt or rag under it, i just use it for the oil changes and dump into the bigger container.

i usually drain the oil first, then take the filter off and set it on the tray to drain.

yeah sometimes i do miss the hole at first but usually pretty good at it, i have one of the pans you have in your third picture, I used that when i first drained the tranny fluid to see what was in it.

I also have been Blitzed. I use the 2nd type in the photo- the black one with the green caps on it. The center green plug strips the first time you try to tighten it. Since I don't have a garage so everything is outside in the rain. This means the pan catches the rain water which leaks past the plug and into the oil and mixes. So when you take it to the recycling center, the oil is half water and contaminates the rest of the oil barrel. The other hazard is that you have to transport this leaking pan in your car and hope it doesn't slosh onto the trunk. With these faulty designs, Blitz is contributing to the environmental mess, instead of helping recycle used oil.

glad I found this thread, I too have been 'blitzed'. bought the big yellow cap one, liked that it was made in USA (that USED to mean something) and it blitzed all over me and the street when I tried to pick it up. upon examination, I saw that the big cap most certainly doesn't tighten (imagine that, hot oil makes it soft too!). returned it, and got blitzed from the counter jockey at AZ. typical 'never seen that happen before, you must have over tightened it'.I had to wait 15 minutes while they all took their turn 'checking' it.
next one I got leaks too. didn't bother returning it, I just use it as a catch pan.

I was at wal-mart the other day picking up a stereo wiring harness and also of course had to go browse the oil aisle... anyhow I spotted some new transport jugs...

I may pick a few up for both oil and ATF changes. Of course, I'll drain into one of the pans first, as I have 2 of the 15 quart ones, and one of the 6qt ones that are messy!

This is what I use. Excellent unit.

I think they're a waste of money, why pay for something you can get for free? Old washer fluid jugs and kitty litter jugs work perfect

Seems to me that 5 quart container you just poured the new oil in from is the freest container around. It is definitely oil resistant and is labeled correctly too. I'm anxiously awaiting for them to make oil containers even larger in the common brands.

I have the second drain pan pictured in the OP. The center cap is cracked, broken and gone, but the pan still serves me well. The vent cap and pour spout cap are still fine. When I transport the oil to the recycling center I just twist a paper towel into the center hole and I have yet to have a problem. Overall, I feel it's a good pan, although the design of the center cap could be better.

On the website it states "3 Gallons" The thing I like about that one is the wide mouth on it. I could drain directly into it from my truck (Fumoto Valve) Easier to pour in from my other pan as well, no funnel needed.

I've never thought of drain directly into a plastic container before. Have to try it next time. It'll put the Fram Sure Drain to good use.

I purchased one of these for my last OCI, about a month ago. After draining my 7 qts of used oil into it, i screwed the large yellow lid onto it, securely but not over-tight. I stood it up vertically, and the freaking large lid came off!!!

Yes, I had about 5 qts of old dirty motor oil on my nice clean garage floor. Made me so angry. Took me a few hours, several rolls of paper towels, some newspapers, sand, Simple Green, and a stiff bristle brush to get it cleaned up. Completely ruined my saturday.

I had that one and just left it in my old house (IIRC) for the new owner. He was a kid, just getting out of the Army and didn't have all that stuff, so he was happy to get my garage duplicates. (And frankly, I was tired of packing and storing [censored], or taking it to Goodwill for the tax write-off, etc, since I was going to live in an apartment for a while, looking for a new home.)

I found the top was hard to get on.

I bought a rectangular pan at Wal*Mart that has two small drain holes as well as the capped hole to drain the pan.

It's OK, but I don't transport oil in it. I keep WW fluid bottles or the old 4 or 5 quart jugs to transport used oil to the parts store.

I'm not really happy with it, so maybe I'll take a look at the parts store today when I change the oil in the '94 Geo this afternoon. Maybe there is something better out there...
