Hi guys, first time posting here:
Location: Los Angeles
Car: 2004 Subaru WRX 2.0 turbo, 83k miles on the clock. 70hwy/30city. I

Very common problems with the WRX engine are oil consumption and fuel dilution. With that being said, I've been running Pennzoil Platinum 10w40 (5k oci) with great results, zero consumption and 30+mpg on freeway(epa rated 27 hwy), although oil still smells like gas.

I'm currently running Pennzoil Platinum 10w30, and starting to see oil consumption again.

Now, Pennzoil Platinum 10w40 is nowhere to be found, so I'm thinking of blending 50:50 PP 5 or 10-30 with Pennzoil Conventional 20w50 for 4k oci. I'm more concerned about weight because these cars really don't like thin oils.

Any ideas what weight will I be looking at?
And let me hear your thoughts too. Thanks

You could always try Renewable Lube's 5w40 HD. It was specifically designed for fuel dilution plus it very much so stays in grade if it gets it.

Search around and you'll find plenty on that particular oil.

Also....

I do not think that just because your oil smells like gas means that you have a fuel dilution problem. Not saying that you do not but I would not base it only on that fact.

Thanks for the replies.
Boutique oils are nice, but I want to stick with something readily available at walmart.

yeah, I know that w/o a used oil analysis you can't say anything for sure, but from the few used oil analysis done on subaurs so far, the lighter oils do lose viscosity.

This is just something I want to experiment with, I'll probably do a used oil analysis on them too.

just took a look at the Mobil 1 0w40 and TD 5-40 specs, they're really impressive! both got TBNs like 11-12. are these stuff available in walmart 5 qt jugs? never paid much attentions to the mobil stuff, guess I'll go check them out tomorrow. If they have either, I'll probably try them out...

I like the suggestion of running one of the premium Group II based 15w40 HDEO's like … Delo 400 or Rotella T (there are many others).

You could also mix some 15w40 to you synthetics to thicken them up. I would see no need to cut your oil change interval to less than the 5k miles with these premium HDEO's. These Group II based HDEO's are very good motor oils. ISOSYN is the name for Chevron's Group II base oil …

Quote:
Delo 400

ISOSYN Technology and Unique Additives produce an engine oil that cost-effectively disperses soot and minimizes oxidation to extend drain interval capabilities, increase oil filter life, and resist bearing corrosion … … Cost-effectively Rivals Performance of Synthetic Oils

i have not mixed different weights but I did do 3 quarts Pennzoil Conventional 5W30 with 1.5 quarts Pennzoil Platinum 5w30.

i wouldnt think it would hurt a thing mixing 10/40 with 15w or 20w50. I myself would not be scared to.

some people throw in odd bottles they have leftover and the motor does not explode

Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 is cheap and available at Wal-Mart. I'd give it a try.

Be sure to send in a sample of it.

That blend that the guy on nasioc did would probably hold up better than Mobil 1 0W40. Actually, a guy in FL runs the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W40 in a stock FXT and has had that shear to a 30 grade twice. I guess that's better than an xW30 shearing to a 20.

I would vote for a diesel 5W40 as well. Or maybe GC if you have it at a local Autozone.

I've tried 5w30 in my Legacy GT and use at least a quart in 5k.
Oil consumption is much less with a 5w40. All synthetic, by the way. Currently using Rotella T Syn. No uoa, but I like it for a 5k run.

I've read many a post by European car owners (on several other forums) that push their OCIs out to the edges of reason and they all seem to love Mobil 1 0w40.

A lot of Euro and Asian Subaru turbo owner's run 40 and 60 grades and have 10,000 k OCI's in their turbos.

I run the Mobil 1 10w30 / 15w50 mix all the time, but only b/c I have a lot of those two oils in the stash. I'd run Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W40, HM 10W40 if I had to go shopping.

Thank you for all the reply guys. I just picked up 1 jug of Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 and 1 jug of Pennzoil Conventional 20w50 today. They didn't have any Mobil 1 0w40 or 5w40, although they did have Delo 15w40 and Mobile delvac 15w40 over there.

Now the Delo 400 idea becomes very tempting... should I go back to exchange the dino for the Delo? can't make up my mind now

Would it make an interesting uoa for the 2 Pennzoil mix? I'm sure the car will be fine. You guys think it'll be worthy to experiment a little?
