Car is a 96 Camry four cylinder with 90K mostly highway miles and is in very good mechanical condition. Factory oil Spec is 10W30.

I have Amsoil 2000 Series in 0W30 and 5W30. Should I try to blend them attempting to reach 10W30, or use them 'as is'. The car might see 0 F degree once a year. Otherwise, 20 F - 95 F highway miles is the norm.

Thanks for knowledgeable replys Gents.

Thanks for the reply oilboy.

My concern is will 0W30 provide good service in the hot summer that may get to +95 F and still work when the temp drops to 32 F a few times in the winter ?

NCGuy68,

I am currently running a mixture of the Amsoil 0w-30, 5w30 and 10w30,
I mixed the three oils because I had a little of the 0w30 & 10w30 in large containers and did not want to order more of these oils to go with the amount I had left, so, I dumped them together and added some 5w30 I had in quart bottles.
I would not worry about mixing the 5w30 and 0w30 but those two oils will not make a 10w30, you will have a mixture more along the lines of what oilboy posted.

There is nothing wrong with mixing these oils per se, but the logic doesn't sound correct. Either will be fine for you climate, switch to 10W next go around, if you like.

Switched from Castrol GTX to S2K at 50K miles. I picked up about 2 mpg on the highway and at a solid 37 mpg now. Did a cylinder leak down test recently that was well within spec. Doesn't burn or leak a drop of oil and runs like its brand new. The motor has never been opened and still has the factory plugs, wires, cap, rotor, etc.

Quite a amazing little four banger - a keeper for sure!

Yep, sure is a nice engine. Sounds like you've maintained yours well, NC.

Regardless, have you ever seen this site?

You'll do very well with continued running of the S2K if your engine is vulnerable. Might even want to consider a 3-ounce maintenance dose of Auto-RX in it (or better yet, do a full clean and rinse) to be sure:

Visit the "Additives, Fuel, Oil, Cleaners" hop-to for more info.

Unlike Mobil 1, which uses the same chemistry throughout the entire line up, Amsoil uses many different chemistries for all their oils. You can mix them, but I wouldn't expect the best results.

No problem. NCGuy, you can use the 0w, 5w- or the 10w year round. It really won't matter. The 0w30 will give you better gas mileage and cold starting during the winter months and still protect well during the summer months as a 30wt. Being the chemistires aren't quite the same, although they are somewhat similar, I'd use each by themselves and avoid mixing.

Thanks for the link Isla, I've seen the artical before here on BITOG. Mine was born in 5/96, three months before the sludge problem croped up in the 4-cyl. Camrys. I realize though, mine could still be prone to it.

Prior to the first S2K fill, I ran a can of Amsoil engine flush thru it following directions on the can. That should have cleaned it pretty good, but short of pulling the valve cover, I really don't know. I'll consider the auto-rx.

Being the Pro-Active maintenance guy I am, I decided to change the timing and external belts when it hit 85K miles about a year ago. Comparing the old belt to the new one, I just wasted my time. The used belt showed virtually no wear. Thats the only major 'wrenching' I've done on the motor, if you want to consider a timing belt major - I don't.

As I mentioned, its a amazing little motor. Only wish I could get that kind of reliablity out of the two late model SS Camaros I own.
