Is there anyway to save them? I have a couple sets of the Gator Blades and they both have rounded off tips. So they don't cut good.

Probably my fault as I sharpen them with a grinder.

I hit my blades with a grinder (hand held) and don't get rounded tips. Operator error.

Get new mower blades. Cut the old ones up and make weeding implements out of them. Pretty fair steel for that, but a little thick. Still, it can be done.

Didn't think to say that a little bit of rounding is no big problem, but a LOT of round might be an issue. It depends on how anal you are about that kind of thing. If you keep the grinder off the tips it might even out enough to not worry about. Or, it may be nothing to worry about now, if it's working ok.

It's a front mount mower so when you are turning the blades don't cut well to begin with. I suppose I could try grinding the rest of the blade down over time to match.

Just replace the blade. Doing what you are talking about will be dangerous (making the blade thinner and weaker. Blades are cheap, just go to sears/walmart/etc and buy a new one.

I came to this section to post about this very topic.. odd, anyways i have the same problem as i also sharpen mine with a grinder. I suppose its time to poney up the $ and just buy a new set of blades. Maybee i should just see what kinda deal i can get on amazon..

also, ive only cut my grass twice (three acres to cut) and my old blades are already fairly dull. this is disapointing. No im not getting fancy and using a stone etc, just a bench grinder to get a edge back on it again.

I still have my mulching kit blades that are curved, maybee give them a turn ?

That's why I like the Gator blades. They are very hard and stay fairly sharp all summer.

+1 I have Gator blades on my Deere, and have installed them for a few customers all with great results.

well, no excuses $6 per blade to sharpen and balance at the shop so basically $20 or just order a new set for $30 on amazon with free shipping and no taxes..

I've been fortunate in that I have a 4.5" angle grinder and a large shop vise on the workbench. Sharpening blades is so drama-free that I can't understand how it is that people buy new blades every year, or even go without sharp blades.

It takes all of five minutes from remove to replace. The key is to not strike rocks, toys, or large sticks. That way there are no large dents to grind out, unbalancing and shortening the lifespan of the blade. For a normal sharpen, I simply start at the top and make a series of grinds from the base of the sharp section outwards. If required, I'll do it again. And maybe again. Don't go too slow and heat up the blade, don't go too fast and get nothing done.

Probably the biggest reason to buy an angle grinder, as far as I'm concerned.

Good to know, I picked up a 4.5" 7A Milwaukee angle grinder last week primarily for blade sharpening.

What kind of grinding wheel are you using?

Yep, take your time and try to keep the geometry intact. They wear much more at the ends, so you need to compensate for that when grinding to keep the cutting edge straight and approximately aligned to the axle/parallell to the original edge.

Whatever metal-specific wheel I got at Lowes or Home Depot.

I'd have to look. I bought several a couple of years ago, but don't remember anything particular about them other than that they for metal.

Be advised, the brand new blade will need to be used a bit to break off the sharp corner. The grind won't be pretty until then.

I spent $33 shipped to my door for a fresh set of blades from Amazon, My mower is much much happier now, the blades are just ever so slightly thinner than the factory blades (not alot) but i sure could tell after i installed them ! my Mower ran 110% smoother and the motor even sounded better (stronger) maybee due to spinning less weight ? new balanced blades ? a combination maybe ? All i know is im only out $33 bucks and my mower now has a super fine clean cut to it. Im very very pleased with this.
