Blackstone Prices Going UP

Meh. $20 here, $25 there, no difference to me. In the interests of longevity and trying not to do two major repairs one right after the other, I'll want to do at least 3 UOA's when I get around to changing/freshening the engine in my car. One each for the first two oil changes after the break-in stuff is out and then one after a full year. Maybe more if recommended.

Is it ever worth it to do a UOA on the BREAK-IN oil? Maybe I should do four. I know nothing about UOA's other than they can pinpoint problems and provide insight.

Wearcheck Canada has been very good to me, their turnaround time is very fast and anytime I've had concerns they've addressed them quickly (such as if I wanted something re tested)

I'm using them this UOA and have yet to ask them the differences in their sampling to prospectively understand the variations in results that one might get between their testing and others( Blackstone, etc.).

I know that two different samples at the same lab would come out different, so it would be quite hard to compare across different labs. But you get the idea...

I have been using their services for the last year or so and have been very pleased. Fast turn-around, and the report is very thorough.

I used them as they were a sponser . I may look at a local lab...... Postage, hot air balloons, the price of tea in China...everything goes up, including the price of oil analysis. But there's still time to do your sample before we raise prices at the end of the summer. Got a sample in the garage that you haven't sent in yet? Send it now!.........That means I have to shop around for lower priced labs to make my $$$$ go farther.

Mabe we can do a group purchase, some one might give [censored] and call and ask them about this group purchase, Im up for one hehe.

It's weird, when prices go up, my purchasing seems to go down. I wonder why

Its worth $25 to me. Between the recently bought used car and the inherent (best case) speculation you can make from the seller and their service invoices, some minor tweaks I've done to it, and experimenting with a new syn for the first time... its a cheap price to pay to get another view through the UOA.

Even with the limitations built into it, its useful data that's easy and relatively cheap to obtain (and I'll probably do at least 2 or 3 of them just for trending purposes).

I don't need o/a. I let my dealer change my oil every 6 months,or so,at about 4500 miles with an M1 filter and M1 EP. 108K, and runs perfectly.

Isn't that one of the perks of living in a free society - nobody is forcing you to get a UOA

And depending on the person this might be the best way to go i.e being ignorant

...of things oil.

I figure I'm "capitalizing" the cost of the UOA by running M1 EP and an M1 filter, without the hassel.

That's kind of how I rationalize buying more expensive filters - timed right, the difference in the rolled back and regular oil price is equal to or more than the cost of the expensive filter I'm using.

Where I do my own maintenance I figure the money saved on even a half hour labour at the cheapest service station is still more than what a UOA costs. And the savings also buys a lot of tools for my "tool shed" (aka, the steel shelves I keep them on in my apartment's furnace room). And unlike the labour I can re-use them for free (and since its an enjoyable hobby for me I don't put a price on my own time doing the same work).
