Blackout Plates

NY has some different ones but the black ones are novelty and not legal.

My issue here is NY keeps changing plates and designs. If you want your "old" plate number it costs extra. Sadly all of the "gold" plates are peeling paint and NY law is it needs to be replaced. So their failed crap and I have to pay to replace for not being legible? Doesn't seem to be very enforced from what I see but the plates look HORRIBLE.

NY was $136.50 for a 2 year registration back in November with not getting any new plates. I think new plates with same number brought that to almost $180

If they limited it to just the yellow background (which is not used for all plates) it would be fine. The big issue is the pictures of various things special ordered (dolphins, turtles, surfers, etc.) of which some colors are darn close to the colors of the numbers/letters making deciphering the ID at a glance pretty difficult for the average person.
I know about all those colorful Florida plates, I think my favorite is "Endless Summer".
I was just trying to be funny on the yellow plates. Here in FL, and maybe other states, the yellow background indicates someone with too many DUI's.
I'll just keep my Masonic plate though!

Here in OH people just install the dark tinted plexiglass plate covers. Some, if not most of them are so dark you can't even read the plate. I'm sure they're illegal, but LEOs do absolutely no traffic law enforcement here. Zero. The illegally dark window tint also runs rampant here, and nothing is done about that either, which is surprising, because that's a safety issue for the cops...I guess they don't care about that because they never pull anyone over...

California has them and I have them on my 2014 Mustang. I already had a customized plate and wanted to get teh same one but in the Legacy black and yellow. Fortunately a former co-worker in parts was working the counter at the DMV and understood what I wanted to do and made it happen. I had gone in before and had to almost do a drawing explaining that yes it was already taken but it was taken by me.

I don't think that's unique to Ohio. Around here, every fourth car is a high-end SUV with illegal tint, with missing front plate and a dark tinted cover on the rear plate. I've never seen one pulled over although I am sure if I tried that in my Cobalt I'd get "profiled" in about 90 seconds.

Well, the bill proposing these plates was officially approved. They will cost an extra $10. Also passed was increasing the interstate speed limit to 80 from 75...double win!

color-matching plates that are exactly the same as your car color.
1) At the DMV: "Sir, the color's name, Waterfall Mist, isn't acceptable. We need the numeric code".

2) For Mopar owners: "Sir, the color code is a 2 part alpha-numeric part number. Check again."

3) For many: "No ma'am, that's the interior color code"

4) Customer: "How do you think this one would look?" or "What if it's not exactly the same?"

You can see the jam ups at the counter now.
