The Grand Marquis is my project car, and whilst preparing for all the major stuff, I tend to take on a small project every now and then. This time I decided to black out the grille, to go with the rest of the black trim.
After removing the grille, I slowly sanded down the chrome using 800 grit, 1,200 grit and finally 2,000 grit sandpaper. Then I blasted it with two coats of plastic primer and two coats of Krylon Camouflage Paint. I was tempted to use clearcoat, but I really like the matt black finish. Here is what it looks like on the car:
Blacked out chrome on the rear end and the sides. I also tucked in the rear bumper a bit further inside:
Overall, approximately $17,000 is being put into this car and I cannot wait to finish it all off (it's going to take quite a while). At the moment, I'm only just at the point of buying and storing (performance, suspension and body) parts. But here are some sketches of what the car will eventually look like:
Having a word with the paint shop, to see if they will be able to paint in a ghost image of a stretched black Panther on the sides (head will be at the end of the front fenders and tail will be on the rear quarter panel, with the actual body on the doors).
I was planning on replacing the body at one point, but thankfully there is no need to (accident free). But the driver's door, left rear door, left front fender, head panel, front and rear bumpers are being replaced as part of the makeover. Basically, anything that's been previously repaired and/or has body filler is being replaced.
