It doesn't need to be recommended. Its a Full Synthetic with a capable additive package.

There will always be wear in a transmission.

A used oil analysis is definitely needed to see what is going on. Open up the magnefine.

Poor some of the old fluid into a clear 'glass' in the sun and take a picture.

Ams makes a good transmission oil. If it is compatable for your transmission then you have a failure in the transmission itself. Oil should never get black.

Oh, I know all about it. I have sold a lot of it but all to HD trucks.

I was just pointing out that its not the fluid of choice for that trans. Experiment all you want but if you came into my shop and told me you were going to use it in this vehicle, I would try to convince you not to as I don't think you are gaining anything. Just my opinion from over 31 yrs of dealing with lubricants.

To it's credit, it has never needed a single part or broken down in 77,000 miles. Just oil changes and tires. Haven't even done the brakes yet (the Wilwoods are collecting dust). This might be a potential problem but as of now I might be overreacting.

At 77k miles, I should hope not.

Me too, but many people with other manufacturers have big problems long before this mileage. I think the bar is raised extra high for these vehicles and people are more critical when something goes wrong. In real life it's quite common to have something go wrong in 3 years, 77,000 miles.

I still think you should try D4

Just a couple observations after a 350 mile round trip to the beach yesterday...

Shifts improved after switching the fluid out. I'm assuming the fluid is likely worn in order for this to make a difference. It's actually quite a nice difference in shift quality.

BIG, big oversight on my part.... Both axles were replaced when the lower ball joint failed (due to mechanic's error). I'm assuming a couple quarts or maybe a complete drain and refill were done with Z1. I no longer have the invoice but I'm sure it had to lose something when the axles were pulled. It's been close to 20k, more than enough for the Z1 to turn colors.

Color is black, not greyish or silverish as if there was aluminum ground up in the fluid. Wiping it on a paper towel, it didn't look so bad but draining it, it was pitch black. After the trip this weekend, it looks surprisingly good. Maybe not bright red but not bad. I'm extermely glad I did the drain and fill before going on the trip. Time to order another gallon of ATD and get the rest of the stuff out.

You know I can't help myself, right? LOL. And I have no self control. When I place the order for the girlfriend's Murano in a couple months I may have to try it out. Going to check Redline's site right now. If I remember right, they have a fluid for the CVT, also...?

Well, you and I think alike, so I know exactly what you are feeling right now!

"Hmmm, the ester-base is going to resist heat better.... And that is likely what is discolouring the fluid....."

I'll admit it, that's why I want to try it in the Expedition

Exactly. Really, I have no choice but to try it even if I don't want to.... We can't have black fluid now can we? LOL.
