I don't know birds, but I didn't know Bald Eagles hung out in Maine midwinter. Never really looked, but I've never seen them before either.

I wonder if they're a couple. I wonder if they each like their space.

Did you take that picture? If so, he's not hung out, he's looking at you, and it's a look of don't mess with me.

They are a beautiful bird. We have them all over WI and I alway stop to watch them when I get a chance.

In that first shot, that does NO look like a happy bird!

They are beautiful to see up-close.....

Yes, they probably are a couple. Bald Eagles are territorial birds and will defend it, i.e. no strangers are allowed around.

yes those are my pics. I don't think National Geographic uses digital zoom.

Wikipedia says they're all over US and parts of Canada and Mexico and they like water. There *is* a big lake 1/10 of a mile away. Huh.

I too think these guys always look liked they are po'd. Have seen way more eagles around this year than normal. Here are a few taken in the rain last month.

Nice shots saaber.

Sebago lake freezes over probably every other winter and it just froze a week ago. Must be hard for the birds to predict. That'd make these guys mad.

I think the numbers of eagles is growing and it seems to me they are less fearful of humans. I can't remember ever getting close to one but lately it seems like you can just walk right under them.

Saw this guy a couple weeks ago. American Bittern. How is that for camouflage? Even his legs are the same color and height of the green grass.

They will go only as far south in the winter is necessary for them to survive.

I've seen several in the Iowa City, IA area, hanging around the Iowa River. Also seen some in the Moline, IL area, on the banks of the Mississippi.

I lived in Maine in the 60s and 70s and would see Eagles in the winter along the lower Kinnebeck. This last Sunday we went up the Great River Road out of Alton, Il. where Eagles are abundant, and saw 50-60 birds.

I used to see them when I lived on the NC coast, and they're pretty common out here.

Sounds like a good problem to have! When I hunt I've got a $500 crossbow, and $200 in camo on and sit in the woods for hours...
I'm jealous all you need is your 9 iron in your backyard!

We finally had some sun yesterday so took a few shots of a little hawk, northern shoveler, swans, and a little teal. That hawk could barely keep his balance. Must have been really young or something. Saw one mature and one immature B. Eagle. Got some in flight shots of the immature one but they're a little out of focus.
