Well there have been two 3.4s and they've come in a number of vehicles, can you be more specific. Most if not all use the PF47 or PF52 the latter being longer. Use it if there is enough clearance.

I agree with T.

Ahhhhhhhh, using a bigger oil filter will do absolutely nothing to impede the lower intake gasket failure. Buy some GM cooling system tabs and say a prayer every morning before you turn the key.

I didn't mean that the filter would help with the gasket leak, I just wanted to get as much oil in there as I could as the engine gets run hard and I usually use 5 qt jugs and don't want to overfill the sumps. Any idea how many of these engines experience gasket failures?

Thanks,

Mark

They have a faulty plastic design, the heat from the EGR valve causing them to melt. GM has supposedly fixed this problem, but my buddies new Impala has that telltale puddle of coolant under the throttle body....

Otherwise, the 3.1, 3.4 and 3.8 engines were all very reliable, and have given me years of good service.

3.8s have the plastic intake, and contrary to popular belief, that is not the most common problem. I believe this only happens when the coolant gets low. The real problem is DEXCOOL destroys the plastic LOWER intake gaskets. Take a look at my post in the UOA section.

I currently use the Fleetguard LF-3554 which is the longer version of our OEM filter. This filter also has their synthetic media which flows 7.3 GPM compared to the 2.91 GPM the regular media is rated at for this size of filter. The higher flow rate doesn't sacrifice efficiency either, it's rated to filter 10 microns at 73% and 30 microns at 100%. All of this adds up to a great filter for $9 CDN in our cold climate here in Alberta.

PS - August 18th today and it's +9 today! SUCKS! Also a side note, I had the gasket problem at 55,000 kms, (5,000 kms before warranty was done) Faithfully change oil every 5000kms and coolant every spring. I don't know what else I could have done to prevent it!
