Big lots to close all stores

I’m upset to hear this but I’m not surprised. My mom worked for them for about 2 years as her part time 2nd job after Kmart closed up. Now this limits me to only two stores that sell physical media still which is Walmart and Barnes and Noble. Guess I’ll be cleaning up on cheap good DVDs and Blu-Rays while I still can. I like Big Lots actually went there on Sunday to get Christmas stuff and movies. Good place to get furniture too as it’s made by Ashley Furniture.

we had a stand alone one.. and then they moved into part of old BIG Kmart with Marcs a local nonunion bottomfeeder grocery chain.

Also Ollies is way better than big lots.

they are just going the way of the kmart and sears.
Big Lots problem is that it used to be like Ollies and now just sells the same stuff everyone else has for non-competitive prices.

Big Lots Used to salvage retail from defunct companies and sell cheap.

Heck they bought out Delorean when it went under

The place is just a shell of it’s original self for the last 15 or so years.

By way better I mean a closeout store.. vs a dollar general clone.
Yeah, you can find some pretty good deals. I'd pick Big Lots over Dollar General every time though but DGs are so much more common. I pass (3) of them on my way to/from work.

You nailed one of the key reasons Big Lots failed.

they used to truely be a Closeout retailer. when other companies couldn't sell stuff, or went under, they bought the remaining stock, and sold it on to the public
I forgot about that as it's been so long ago but I do remember that they'd even advertise things like products were from a damaged semi-trailer that wrecked and instead of the contents being scrapped, they sold them ! And Odd/Big Lots were one of the companies that would buy the stuff.

Long time ago I think I bought a fistful of Rain-X single-use wipes from them, expired, for 4 for $1.

I used to go there all the time back when they were a true closeout store. 35 years ago I bought some assorted packs of Norton sandpaper at a crazy price and I'm still using part of the last one. IMO they lost a lot of their customer base when they devoted half their floor space to furniture. People don't buy a new dining table very often. I don't think I've been in a Big Lots store since we bought our couch in 2020.

Still, I will miss them.

Multiple news sources reporting Big-Lots will close all 963 stores as they could not find a buyer in Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

I can't say I have ever been in a Big Lots, but I hate to see all those people loosing there jobs.

So sad.
I loved my local Big Lots. Bought my Couch and easy chair there. Plenty of snacks and Soda and sundries.
Their prices were so low for some items though, I was always worried how they could stay in business.

I always feel truly sorry for the wage roll employees , many of whom work their hearts out and have zero control over the things that can be done very poorly in the management offices that end up being the things that deep six many companies. So many employees with many years loyalty , booted with not much of even a thank you. Why does it always happen exactly around Christmas and New Years Holidays , seems like all the time?

Big Lots out my way dramatically raised its prices several years ago. Some of the food items were the same price as in a regular grocery store, and even higher in some cases, so that killed one of the reasons to shop at a place that called itself a discounter.

Ollie's is showing signs of starting down this same path.
