Hi guys, talking power tools here (i.e. dewalt, milwaukee, makita) Is it true that you get a better quality tool if you buy from a tool store, like grainger, as opposed to a big box store like lowes or home depot?

Manufacturers have been known to cheapen down their products to meet the price demands of large discount chains. But if the part number is the same, the tool is the same. However, some times the manufacturer will use a couple of different part numbers for the same item. That way the customer can't make them price-match an item because they found the exact same make/model at a lower price somewhere else. Big box stores will do this with large appliances like refrigerators.
I remember the same line being used by auto part stores back in the 70s when WM was selling spark plugs in a bubble pack for 1/4 the price of what they were selling them for.

I work at Lowe's and in some cases that's true. Go by pricing. During the Thanksgiving through Christmas sales period they offer a Dewalt 18V Driver/Drill for $99 with 2 batteries and a charger. The driver/drill is nothing like the more expensive 18V Dewalt with 2 batteries and charger. But if you need new batteries and a charger it's cheaper to buy the cheap unit because buying just A single new battery is close to $100. And you get a second battery and a charger for the same money. The chargers do burn out in time as well as the batteries needing replacing over time.

Are the batteries the same 18V XPR batteries in amp hours as normal?
I bought a few used Dewalt 18V tools (including chargers, not batteries) on CL and one has a yellow button to push down once every 10 charges. It "conditions" the cells. Anyone have any experience with doing a "condition"?
