So Discount ordered me the wrong sized Traction TAs & called to see if I wanted them to put on the Precept Touring (supposedly a higher end model with better warranty) at the same price. I said sure, figuring I could just take them back before the 30 days if I did not like them. Any experience with these tires? I will report back my impressions. Thanks in advance guys.

That is the tire. Sorry--I should have added I will be switching over to Nokian WR-Plus when the snow starts to fly so snow & ice traction is not a big concern with these BFGs.

I really wish Nokian made the WRs in my O.E. size (245/50 16)!!

Less winter traction than the T/A, which isn't a big concern for you, but they'll be probably be quieter.

I really wish someone other than Kal Tire sold Nokians around here. I was interested in the WRs, but they wanted more for those tires than what I paid for the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. They also wanted $100 per tire more for the Pilots!

If you want a touring tire then sure. If you are looking for a more sporty response while cornering then the Taction T/A's are your animal.

I love my traction T/A's as they handle pretty darn well considering they are inexpensive. Wear rates have been excellent and Traction is pretty good even in the snow. Precept is like their Control Plus which is just a touring tire. THe next step up is the T/A.

A simple case of selling you something totally different than what you want because it happens to be what's in stock. The Precept is a touring tire which will get more mileage, but much less traction than the T/A. If you wanted the T/A then you don't want the Precept.

Ewetho,

Are your Traction T/A's noisy or harsh riding ? What size are they and what vehicle ?

I've run hot and cold on these tires based on posted reviews.

Phil

I love my Traction T/A Hs. They are a little bit noiser and harsher than the old tires, but I also run a higher pressure. I dont really mind the noise or harshness, thats really low on my list of properties a tire must have, anyway. I love their grip. The only thing I dont like about is they tramline pretty bad. Which is where they follow grooves in the road.
Mine are stock size, 195/70R14...

Not really looking for a sporty tire, my wife drives it, a Buick Century, and it spends 70% of its time on the highway. I guess we will drive it for 2-3 weeks and have them put the TAs on if we do not like them. I'll report back in a week or two on my impressions.

At factory pressure they soaked up the bumps better and were quieter than Goodyear Integrity tires that came stock on my Neon.

They also handle and brake much better than the original tires ever thought of. Mine are P185/65R14 H speed rating.

They can get harsh on bigger stuff due to the reinforced sideway near the shoulder and rim. But in the center of the sidewall the tire gets pretty thin and soaks up the regular stuff pretty darn well (and that is in Chicagoland home of the pothole).

I am a huge fan of this tire for replacing touring tires for a slightly more sporty tire and increased traction. I am sure it would not be an upgrade from some nice Michelins touring tire if you want super Quiet touring tire but if you have more everyday models of tires these are sleepers. The biggest problem I see is people trying to compare this to say an Kumho ASX or something like that thinking they are getting ultra dry grip tires. They are not that but generally in the middle of touring tires and the high end grip tires. Great comination for sporty handling in t4 seasons (like in CHicagoland) not the best in any one category but all around they do surprisingly well.

I have them on my outback and while they can be noisey depending on the road surface; the handling, wet weather performance, and snow grip are second to none. You would not be disappointed in the traction TAs...but make sure which "traction" you get...one has large tread blocks, the other looks more like an all-season with smaller tread blocks (both are directional)...I have the ones with the smaller blocks that looks like an all-season tire...

I would not trade these for a snow tire after seeing what they did this past winter...and that was with 20k of wear! Driving in snow was not much different than driving on wet pavement. I fully expect to exceed 60k out of these easily.

I wish they made these in an e-rated 17" truck tire...

See, i thought about nokian wr's, but i just dont see the point when theyre soo expensive. I could get cheap snow tires like winterforce, and cheap summer tires like falken 512's for the same price as one set of wr's.

Ditto here, I echo these comments for my Traction T/A's

Go for the Traction T/A's. Mine seem a little noisy at times, but not too bad. I hated them at first! They rode rough and were really, really, really noisy. After a month or two, they got smoother and quieter! They are holding up really well also. I wholeheartedly recommend them.

ABSOLUTELY TRUE, but my car demands high traction in COLD DRY conditions where the 512s turn to blocks of ice, and regular "spongey/sipey" winter tires (or even the big $$$ hi-po speed rated winters rubber) get ripped to shreds in NO time, due to torque/4.10 axle ratio.

I should explain. I love the Nokians and how they wear for the unbelievable traction I get in the snow & rain, but I swear they wore twice as fast in the summer, and they are extremely expensive. I think by running the BFGs 8-9 months, that this combination will last the life of this vehicle, or at least until I sell it. My wife loves the tires so far. She likes the ride and the quiet, of course the noise is significantly less than the directional Nokians. Still waiting on significant rainfall at highway speeds, and I warned the wife here stopping distance would increase with this tire. One benefit already is it looks like the mpg has jumped about 1.5-2 mpg with the same exact trip everyday.

I've got my son's 2000 Cougar in the shop today. It has BFG Traction TA's on it. They went on 14 months ago and were rotated once before he left for school last August. He called yesterday to say he had a front tire go flat and that the shop he went to to repair it told him he needed new tires. He said he would be home last night so I told him to drive easy and I would get it repaired today. To my horror the 2 front tires were worn down to the belts with only 17,000 miles on them. The tire size is 205/55tr16. Are these tires that bad? Is it his driving (he's 19) or is it the car? He has the car 2 years. It came with new tires on it (some no name brand) which worn out in a year and now these BFG's are shot in a year. The shop is putting on Uniroyal tires which is all they have in that size. I hope they are better.

The Traction TA's are moderately high performance tires and can be expected to last fewer miles than a touring tire. That's not "bad", it's the nature of this category of tire.

However, 17,000 miles is still too short. If two of the tires were worn to the belts without him knowing, your son is clearly not paying attention to them. The pressure was probably not checked since their rotation last August. Combine a high performance tire, neglected maintenance and the typical driving habits of a college-aged kid and you get short tire life.
