this is a new one to me. there was a message on my recorder when i got home from work yesterday from my discover card telling me to call this 1-877 number and give them a reference number that was left. i tried to call the number but it was out of service so i then called the 800 number on the back of my discover card. they got my pertinent information and told me that they had made no attempt to contact me and that the phone call was a scam. the scammers probably wanted to get information like my mothers maiden name, d.o.b. , etc to access something. im thinking that anytime someone calls saying that its your crdit card company and looking for personal information to not give it up. just a little heads up because i was stunned when told it wasn't discover that called me.

I got a call 6 months ago from a lady on my cell, telling me it was my bank, Suntrust and that I had overdrawn my checking account, which I knew had plenty of money in it to cover any checks written, she said I needed to transfer money from my Money market to cover the check so I wouldnt be hit with any fees, I asked her the checking account number and she gave me a account that was not mine, I have my checking account number memorized, because I do all the banking. I told her it didnt match, she then asked what my social was, I told her I would stop at the a Suntrust office and clear this up, she then became mad and said we are trying to save you fees by doing this now, I said then your office will because Iam pulling into the bank now(I wasnt) but she hung up. I called the Suntrust hotline and there was no overdraft and the rep told me, they never notify you by phone, only mail, anytime a bank calls you, which is never, you should hang up and go to your office. I didnt give up any info, but still they got my cell and the bank I bank at, knew I had a checking and money market. Iam still leary about doing bussiness on the internet. Just got to be careful never give up info unless you call them.

I know two people in addition to myself who's accounts were pilfered in the past three years by bank employees, in two different banks. In Canada, it is illegal for social insurance numbers to be used for anything other than dealing with the government. Banks are not allowed to require you to divulge this number.

Down here, you do not have an obligation to give the bank your Tax File Number.

If you do, they notify the Tax office of the interest that you earned, you declare it as earnings, and are taxed at your marginal tax rate.

If you don't, the bank takes 45% of your interest and gives it directly to the Tax Office.

I once had an episode where someone called me 8:30 Sunday morning pretending they were from AOL and needed to update my account. I excused myself that I couldn't give the information at the time, but that I would call them back with the info. They gave me their phone number, I called some time later, heard the same voice, and hung up.

I called AOL about this episode, and interestingly, they didn't seem too concerned about it and I doubt they did anything about pusuing the phone number I gave them.

I am very hesitant to give my Credit Card over the telephone. I buy most of my stuff online or in person - but never over the telephone. Any Joe Schmoe can call you and act like a true company. Once they have your name and credit card number (including 3 digits on back, etc...) then the fun begins.

I don't hardly want to charge meals on a credit card....I mean the people in bars and restaurants have a 100% clear record, I mean their high pay alone should keep them honest........

Sorry. All I can say is www.donotcall.gov
Just another example of the government trying to protect us from everything, right? 8)

It's too bad the government has to do this, but I should have the right to not be bothered by these folks. I can put a "No Soliciting / No Peddlers" sign on my front door, but how do you do that with a phone? I think the phone company should offer us this service. Instead they publicly display our number in their phone books and charge us a fee if we want the number unlisted. I resent pushy sales people calling me whether it be a business or a charity. My home phone has the answering machine message recorded in Spanish. We rarely get solicitation messages on that phone.

Pabs, if you pay for a meal with a CC, try to tip in cash; if you include the tip on the CC, many restaurants try to pass on the service charge to the waitstaff or come up with some "scheme" to bilk them.

In an increasing number of restaurants the staff will bring a portable card scanner to your table. You swipe your card without anybody taking your card behind the counter where they might steal your info.

I actually like to tip with my credit card... keeps the tax man involved.

Keep people hating taxes, they may take action.

Today I received a call from "credit card central" they wanted to verify that the card in my wallet was the correct card by me telling them the 3 digits on the back. I told them where to go.
