I was in the hospital for about 40 hours. I had some chest discomfort that I couldn't reason away. It was over a fairly broad area of my chest and it didn't get altered by breathing or moving and it wasn't gastric. In hindsight, I think it was due to a good dose of nitrates that I had consumed earlier in the day. This has given me something not unlike a niacin flush (for you vitamin freaks out there) ..but more localized to the diaphragm. The same sensation, although not painful per se~, can be felt with the dye that's used in CAT scans. My wife was working overnight and I thought that it would be really stupid to have her return home to a corpse if something did come of it and I wasn't able to reach a phone. So off I drive to the ER and wake up the triage nurse (pretty young thing that took my merciless humor assaults in stride). Naturally, they find nothing ...but that's just not good enough. So, the ER doctor, who I expected to play Pontius Pilate and merely throw me in a holding pattern until more specialized physicians arrive for rounds, actually spent some time with me and said that he needed to admit me to confirm that there was nothing wrong.

Well, they found nothing wrong. My family physician showed up in the morning ..as did my old family physician (Pulmonary specialist that took us on until his patient load got too high). They both asked what's up and asked a few questions ..as did their cardiac specialist.

I managed to ask all of them how one can become un-hyper tensive when you've been hyper tensive for over a decade. They didn't have a clue. I pushed on and said ..sure there are ways to reduce hyper tension with diet ..exercise ..lifestyle changes ...but I'm still a walking risk factor and am no longer hyper tensive. I told them all that I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop in some "House" type situation where the loss of hyper tension in the midst of aggravating risk factors is some obscure and critical condition.

They said that they would name it "Allan's syndrome" if I do indeed succumb to some new rare condition that fits the bill.

Nursing babe-age has improved. All the nurses my age are retiring. Displays of tattoos and body piercings were entertaining. Meiko didn't get insulted when I reflected her abbreviated English. She did very well with L's and R's. This place felt more like a spa than it did a medical facility.

Good to see that all's well Gary.

Ended up on an ECG machine in April 2006 for weird feelings and pain that I didn't like.

Doctor interviewing me and taking measurements told me to change employers, as they see a lot of our companies shirts in ER.

Family quack did another ECG, and prescribed valium rather than a change in career...LOL

Glad you are better.

Hopefully all will be well. I guess the gold standard to getting to the root of the problem is still the heart catheter. Wife had problems for months. All the kings horses and all the kings men found nothing.

She had the heart catheter run up there and it must have opened something up bc the problem went away. Her arteries were clear. That was 25 years ago.

There are arterial spasms that occur that are hard to diagnose. I guess they just put you on medication for it and call it a day.

It's a new thing they call "Defensive Medicine." It's designed to ward off any possibility of lawsuits stemming from inadequate medical care at the expense of higher health care costs for everyone else. Myself, I don't care; I've got a government medical insurance card with a zero out of pocket premium.

What? I thought you had to live in Canada to have a government insurance card.

Chest pain is one of those things that can be caused by a multitude of things. I have gone in a few times before for either pain or atrial fibrillation (surely I misspelled that one). I have had the scope up the artery and the nuclear die stress test, along with ultra sound of carotid arteries. Only thing they fond was some blockage in an artery feeding the bottom outside of the heart. Take 81 mg asprin a day and 2000 mg niacin a day to hopefully boost HDL, which is too low. Not to mention Prilosec daily, without which one can get pains in the chest area. I still get pains in the chest area and have no idea why but since all that stuff was checked out, I don't have to worry about it.

My Dad wasn't feeling quite right one day so he drove himself to the hospital. Turns out, he was in the beginning stages of a heart attack. He's had two bypasses and is still with us. Good thing you took the precaution you did!

The heart catheter may be my next step. I go to see the cardiologist next week.

On the cost end of things ..Meiko offered me a flue shot and, what she called, a pneumonia "vaccine". That aspect of it did seem somewhat like a quick lube offering the injector cleaner and new air filter. I'll see how the bill shakes out. The business office person stopped in and was pleased to tell me that everything was covered by the $100 deductible. Apparently this is a very rare thing. "Good news, Mr. Allan. You've got very good insurance...".

Merkava-4 sacrifices the higher yield of the private sector for the perks of government benefits. It's a wash. It's only appealing now since we're mostly moving into a higher benefit usage era. I'd surely give my eye teeth to get a municipal job that I couldn't possibly consider 10 years ago due to the wage difference.

Yeah,OMG, I'll take the hit for a false alarm. We're at the age where the flaws in our armor start to show themselves. Too little real estate to gamble with.

Shannow may be on to something. I don't worry anymore about too much stuff. I may spout off about economics and whatnot ..but I just don't get too rocked by anything. Maybe that lack of stress is what's done it. Oddly, I never felt under stress when I developed hyper tension. I was as happy as you could be with my job and had a much easier time economically.

Maybe it was getting to the point of "almost being done" with the children. We're just about empty nest. Now I don't have most of that burden to carry. My wife, otoh, thrives with anxiety of spending her youth on her young. She's even more stressed out not having a purpose that drove her ragged for 25 years.
