If air is going around the a/f because of a poor seal, the very best filtering material will yield poor results.
Assuming the replacement filter is a reasonable fit, what are your suggestions on the best method to seal it?

sometimes brand names isnt the reason. the filter box is warped or something like in my case.

people use silicone...i use friction tape. its a double sided stickey rubbery tape that stinks..but it creates a good seal...my car has been great for 10k without leaking....

its only like 3 bucks for a huge roll...

Back in the olden days, we sometimes used a little plain old wheel bearing grease to help seal a problem air filter. The friction tape sounds much cleaner to use! Why didn't I ever think of that?

Good idea, DD91.

That double sided rubber electrical tape sounds interesting. As long as it does not get injested.

Seems like I read MAFs were sensitive to silicon coating the element.

I'm interested in this. I put in a new filter recently and did it 2 times because I doubted the seal.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by friction tape though. I have some 3M double sided tape that is pretty thick, I think it's made to mount things (replacement for screws). Any idea if that would work? Seems like it would be thick enough and would stick well.

K&N Sealing Grease provides an airtight fit around sealing surfaces on all types of air filter elements. It resists heat and will not melt or run off. K&N sealing grease is not to be used on clamp-on filter elements.

I use plain grease....works good and it's very easy to apply.

Use a small amount of grease on both mating sides of filter. It works!
