My trans is still young and I want to put a top of the line fluid in in order to help it to last longer, if thats possible. I currently have Valvoline, is there something better I could be using?

Don't know what you're going to put it in but Mobil ATF type F and Mobil synthetic ATF seems to be a no-no in a Mercon V using auto trans.

Mobil ATF Type F is not recommended for automatic transmissions in Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, American Motors, or any other cars requiring a Dexron-II, Dexron-IIE, Dexron-III or Mercon-approved fluid, or for those Ford products requiring an M2C138CJ

Mobil Synthetic ATF
For many GM, Ford and import vehicles. Approved for use in vehicles specifying:

Dexron III, Dexron IIIE, Dexron
Now approved for H specification, the latest GM Dexron III performance level
Mercon
Recommended for Allison C-4 and Caterpillar TO-2 applications

Mobil Multi-Vehicle ATF synthetic blend will work in a Mercon V and Mercon.
Mobil Multi-Vehicle ATF is a premium synthetic blend lubricant for automatic transmissions and other applications that require a fluid satisfying Ford's Mercon V specification or General Motors' Dexron III (now approved for H specification, the latest GM Dexron III performance level) or Dexron II specifications.

It is also approved for applications where a Ford Mercon type fluid is recommended. Additionally, Mobil Multi-Vehicle ATF is suitable for use in both newer and older Chrysler automatic transmission applications

There is not any auto transmission fluid that should be left in for 50,000 miles in recent Honda 5 spd automatics. They need more maintenance than that to survive.

99 Olds, so all that it needs is normal DexronIII?

Mobil1 and RoyalPuple are available at several autoparts stores. I always prefer synthetics.
But, any DexronIII that meets the most recent spec is good enough if you maintain it at a regular interval.

An ATF filter and additional ATF cooling would do much to make it last forever.

with no towing or hot climate
Chevron ATF Mercon/DexIIIh, a great GrpII ATF
total 10 qt. gentle flush change every 30k...1/3rd the price of the syn stuff which is wasted in your app.
spend the $50 saved on good microbrew or a good wine

I think the key is to change it out frequently. Might be worth going with the MerconV. That's what I went with my 01 Sentra. But I'll let others point out why Mercon V might not be a good choice.

More important is an oil analysis on the 3.1. If you haven't replaced intake gasket yet..The chances are 100% that you have a coolant to oil leak.
