Best Toyota Engine...

I appreeciate the responses, guys - especially yours, vad.

Maybe I need to get more specific in my inquiry... which small engine (four or six cylinder) is bulletproof and basically runs forever? Once I narrow that down, I'm looking at purchasing that vehicle next.

The Corolla 1.8 liter engine is bulletproof. I've got 282,000 miles on my '95 DX with the 7A-FE engine, and I have no complaints with the horsepower. The suspension isn't as sporty as the Civic, but fuel economy is better.

I've seen some good numbers from the 3rd generation Accords ('86 - '89). 400K miles is not uncommon at this site:

Along with Toyota, Volvo 4cyl castings seem to be very durable as well.

like they say a Toyota engine will last longer than the body. they will rust apart before the engine goes. I know a guy has a toyo truck and dogs the **** out of this poor thing and only a 4 banger. he got a 98 ranger v6 and he said this truck cant haul itself up a hill with no load.

Honda has a good engine also but if it isnt a v-tec it has no power. seems like toyo 4 bangers has decent power.

i put almost 400k on toyotas with the 22r series engines with no problems other than timing chain guide replacements. and 1 head gasket.

Every toyota engine is bulletproof. since you're talking about new cars, any of the 2ZZ engined vehicles (matrix, corolla) will be great. My sister has a matrix and it runs fantastically.

As for older cars, the 7AFE and 4AFE are both bulletproof. I own a 4door with 4AFE and while low on power, its low maintenance, gets good gas mileage, and runs strong.

I also own an older toyota, a 1985 corolla GTS. 4AGE powered. 4AGE's are gods gift to low-high tech nerds like myself.

20-22r series.... too many miles to count no longer avail though. but for newer trucks the 3.4,4.0,4.7 are great and show good used oil analysis any of those.. the 1.8 in the carolla/matrix is wonderful also.. the 2.4 in the camry/highlander seem buzzy but are also fine and have a good track record. if i was looking for mpg the reg 1.8 and 5spd would be my choice.

I just started an engine replacement tonight in a 220k mile 94 Corolla. Cylinders 3 and 4 are dead. My money is on burnt valves alot more than worn rings. I love my 5VZ-FE with the TRD supercharger and washer fluid injection.

Honda makes good engines but generaly Honda engines lack the durability of a Toyota engine. Honda usualy bias's their engine designs toward high rpm HP while Toyota normaly bias's toward low end torque and as flat of a power band as possable. Honda's high rpm bias increases their incidence of piston slap and excessive oil consuption. Now I am not saying that Honda engines are going to be piston slapper and oil burners from day one like some GM designs. It usualy takes a good 80,000-150,000 miles before any of these things start happening. Obviously the way the vechile is maintained and used has a huge inpact on weather it ever develops piston slap or excessive oil consuption issues. Honda normaly bias's all of their designs toward sportiness in terms of suspension while most of Toyota's bias is on daily driveing for all but it's most sporty models!This is why Honda's are fun to drive and Toyota's are usualy boreing!

If you want a kick but V6 look at Toyota's new 3.5 V6 that is available in the new Camry,Avolon,Rav 4 etc.... the new truck V6 is also impressive. The few UOA we have seen of this V6 have been impressive!

If you want a I4 look at the 2AZ-FE wich is used in the Camry,Scion tC and many other models. It ia 2.4 and has also put up some impressive UOA numbers. I have this engine in my Camry and it is smooth and refined. It has a wide and flat power band. I have 32,000+ miles on it and in that time it has only burned 1/4 of a quart of oil one time! It was the first time I put synthetic in it. It has not burned any oil since.

2zzge engines in toyotas stink from what I have read on the celica boards in the past. The oil pump for the variable lift seems to get chewed up. I had a MR2 spyder that I flogged, used synthetic and that thing was on its last leg at 20K miles (thats right TWENTY). Those engines had a ton of trouble with the oil control rings and cat converters, especially the 2000 2001 models.
