Toyota has no diesel offering in the USA, as of right now.
I like the 2AZ-FE 2.4L four in my Camry. VVTi, decent power and MPG, timing chain, no belt to replace. Mass produced, used, and proven in Camry, Highlander, tC, and Japanese vans, since 2000.
Their V6s are fine too but I don't like the idea of a timing belt.

The 2JZ-GTE motor in the MKIV Supras was bulletproof.
Check out this option for having a Toyota diesel in the US. If my engine blows, I'm considering this.

I'm with you, Johnny Z. The 2AZ-FE is also installed in the RAV4, btw -- probably Toyota's broadest-use engine, ever.
No V6 can ever be anyone's best engine.
Get an IS300. Such a nice balance: rear wheel drive, smooth inline 6, good manual 5pd, lots of grip, and big brakes. Bad mileage and expensive tires, though.

4AGE and the 4AGZE
Hey guys - I'm getting geared-up to purchase a new vehicle soon, and as I'm one of those folks who buys one and keeps it until it dies (I have a 1986 Jeep Comanchee, 1994 Altima and a 2000 Wrangler - all bought new) I wanted to get one for the long haul. From my readings on this nifty site, it seems most people think the Toyota engines are the best, and last the longest. If so, could anyone suggest exactly which engine, and what models it comes in, so I can consider?

Toyota's worst engine is the 3VZE (3.0 V6). Mine has 191k mi, I'm on my Auto-RX 2nd rinse and it is running stronger than ever.

how about the 1.8? in the corolla - i've seen many to be running on the road even by people who dont know anything about maintenance or just dont care (9 out of 10 bank robbers recommend it for quick and reliable get-a-ways, ha ha)

Was your engine ever performing poorly? I have the same engine in my '01 RX-300(49,000+ miles). Everything seems normal and I haven't really done anything special to it except keep the oil/filter and transmission fluid changed pretty regularly. I will soon be changing the fluid on the DIFF. & T/C.

The Toyota and Lexus V8's are the best mass produced engines on the planet for durability and reliability. These engines are putting up even better numbers then Toyota's I4's! The 2AZ-FE I4 is a great performer but does not have the long time tract record of the 22RE. The 22RE's were known to go 300,000-500,000 miles on a regular basis.
I'd have to throw in the Corolla engines as well, but just for durability. The newer ones have decent power but the 4AFE and 7AFE just can not get up and go!
I have a 1982 Toyota Starlet that has either a 3KC or 4KC engine in it. It was towed in 1st gear behind a RV at 80MPH and and is fine. It got so hot that all of the hose's and belts melted off the engine. It still does not burn any oil at all and will light the rear wheels up. It sits for 6-9 months at a time and when I put the battery in it it fires right up. THe seals do not leak either. I did I mention that when I bought this car back from my Aunt it sat in their field for 2 years with no oil in it at all. When I got it the valve cover, head and pan where full of sludge from my aunt driveing it 200 miles a day for 4 years with no oil changes. All she did was top it up as it needed it!
Only have experience with 5sfe's and i dont like them. theyre buzzy, unrefined and uninspiring. at least it has pillows for engine mounts on the camrys they were installed in!
