What's your opinion when to change the oil for a one year oci? Before winter to have a lot of tbn for the harsher winter conditions in michigan, or just after winter to stretch the tbn out with less harsh summer conditions?

If you drive few enough miles to only need a change once a year, I would probably change it in the spring, since it would be the most sheared down for the winter.

Total About 14k year In the 2014 focus, bought some asmoil signature 5w20. My guess was late fall for the oil change while its above 50f still outside. that way the oil is fresh for the abuse winter will give it

I asked this question before and I got two answers: fall and spring.

The argument for fall is the oil has the strongest TBN, and the best cold-performance when it is fresh.

The argument for spring is the oil gets beat up in the winter.

The viscosity is hard to predict, it is possible you will get sheering or dilution, but it is possible to also get thickening. Suspension of combustion byproducts is also supposed to influence cold performance.

I agree with both points, just curious if fresh tbn through winter will be enough for the summer or what's left over after summer will be enough for winter.

Since tbn depletion isnt linear maybe that last couple tbn after summer will be enough for 4 months of winter? Will find out going to due a uoa after my first one year oci, will be starting that oci In March when my change is due

My wife's Mustang gets 1 oil change per year.

I just changed it last week to make it during a bit warmer weather (OLM was 20%). I changed it over Thanksgiving weekend last year (OLM was 3%).

My Ram gets one oil change each spring & fall, at least while still under warranty. It'll be due next week. I picked Oct. & April.

+1

And as for the winter weather performance, I think fuel loading accommodates that

I usually do spring, first day that I can enjoy an oc is when it gets done.

"The Cyclone looked at me and grinned 'said okay punk here we go again....seems to me some guys never learn'"

Probably in the fall or spring for the human aspect (no handling cold tools or wintry weather, or summer heat exhaustion , letting the engine cool. Just temperate enjoyable climates.

For me I think before summer would be ideal, but for you (up North) Fall may be best. I value good heat characteristics moreso than you who should put more stock in cold flow. So.........around Halloween?

I have a summer driver that gets stored over the winter. I change the oil once a year in the fall just before storage. I figure that the less combustion by-products in the oil the less harm to the engine components while it is infrequently started.

Change oil once per year.... I would say in the spring, once temperatures moderate above 50 degrees.

That way you can get rid of all the shearing/gunk/condensation/dry start cycles that has built up over the winter.... and be sure to run synthetic.
