hello everyone. just before christmas i went out and bought myself a new pickup truck! It is a 2007 GMC Sierra classic 1500. my last truck had the 3.8 liter v6. This time i went all out and got the big 4.8liter v8! I know this big powerhouse v8 will need a very special oil but i cannot decide what brand to use. I only want the best so i was thinking of using fully synthetic supertech oil but i can not seem to find it in 20w50. the manual says to use 5w30 but i know better than that. I will be changing the oil every 2500 to 3000 miles for long engine life. any sugestions? By the way i am sure you will all have alot of questions for me about my new truck so let me just say YEA SHE REALLY GOES! thanks.

Good luck with your new rig and welcome! I'd first suggest using the 5W30 that was recommended, especially during the Northern Minnesota winters. Then change oil as required based on how you use your pickup truck, severe service, normal operation, etc. As far as finding the very best oil good luck.

Congratulations on your new purchase. Get the Amsoil equivalent from Pablo on the board. It'll be a pretty penny, but from what I understand has great wear numbers, and surpasses all API certification, and is the numberone fans favorite. Then someone else will get on and say save the cash and go Pennzoil Platinum instead, more readily available, and a superior oil for your truck. Dont get a Fram filter. Hooah!

How many miles on the truck?

20w50 is the worst possible choice in your case. 5w30 is what I would use in that engine. It is not true that thicker oil protects engines better. Engines wear most upon startup, and a thick oil like 20w50 in Minnesota is asking for increased engine wear. 5w30 will flow quickly to engine parts thus reducing wear.

As for oil choices, I would stick with conventional oil if you insist on 3000 mile intervals. Conventional oil changed at 5000 mile intervals would be conservative and keep your engine well protected. Any name brand conventional would be fine. Many here like the regular Pennzoil.

If you insist on a synthetic, I would go out to 7500 miles...but don't think conventional oils won't provide all the protection your engine needs.

when i was at walmart today i was looking at oil filters and a guy that was buying some oil told me to use the fram oil filters so i bought 6 of them. should i take them back? what is wrong with fram. he told me they are the best you can buy.

Boy, you're gonna get a lot of different answers about the "best" synthetic oil, that's for sure.

I recommend using the 5W-30 oil, it's good stuff especially in your climate. The old wive's tale that thicker oil protects better is just not true. You need the the thinner oil on startup, especially in Minnesota.

I'm running Amsoil ASL 5W-30 right now, many people think it's one of the best out there. It's a little pricey, and many will tell you that an oil like Pennzoil Platinum will work just as well, and the truth is that you'd be hard pressed to disprove that.

If you feel you need something thinker than the recommended 5W30 , use the amsoil synthetic 15W40. It's thick enough.

At the Wal-mart in my town, They have the AC Delco PF-46 that is what GM calls for your truck for $3.66. Why would you buy Fram over AC Delco?

And its a new truck with a warranty, use the oil GM specs and its NOT 20W50.

As someone once said - the OEM engineers didn't come up with an oil choice over their lunch break.

A few recommdations -

If you're going with short OCIs (
If it were my truck (and I was rich) - 8k OCIs on Amsoil SSO 0w30 thru Site Sponser Gary Allan.

If it were my truck at I had my bank account - 8k OCIs on Pennz. Plat. 5w30.

last monday night it got down to -30 degrees here and in the morning it started just fine. I do not know what kind of oil the previous owner had in it but it was about 2 quarts low so that maybe helped it to start better.

If its a classic and GMT800 doesn't it take the 46? I was thinking the 07 and up GMT900 took the 48, thats when the threads changed.

Umm, I thought you said you bought a new truck.

Previous owner?

that's ok. I think i will take your advise. i am going to return the fram filters and get the ac delco's. i saw that they had them at the walmart where i got the fram filters.

My Silverado 4x4 ext cab 4x4 truck with the 4.8l did the best UOA with Chevron 5w-30 conventional oil. The 2nd best was Pennzoil 5w-30 conventional.

Worst one was Mobil 1. All of the UOAs are posted here and were in the 3-4k OCI.

Excellent motor!

(the new owner sure loves it..)

My Mom has the same engine in her 2002 Silverado ext cab 4x4. Just got back from lunch in it and it sure does well in the deep snow.

Take care and
