I too use and believe in Amsoil, but I have on occasion gone with M1. I have a specific reason in regards to my outdrive on my Volvo Penta 4.3l on my boat. The nozzle on the end of the M1 75w 90 bottle installs perfectly so I can let it drain into the outdrive - it takes a couple hours.
The bottle sits there perfectly. very convenient, and I know M1 products are very good.

Given that info from the Amsoil white paper, I'm more than a little surprised people are still recommending/favoring Royal Purple.

M1 is decent. I'm not fond of (nor surprised by) the shearing.

I am not so happy using redline in finaldrive and manualgearbox after reading Amsoil white papper.

I have already ordered MTG and SVG 75W90 to replace redline fluids in my XC70.

Concerning the Amsoil test, its great for bench testing but in the real world, at what point will it make a difference? will you reach that point?

I have no problem with my M1, Redline, or RP fills. I will not change them out until I get 30k out of the fluid. No synthetic gear oil has ever failed me. I can only guess that I will NOT ever reach the point where it makes a difference.

That point can easily be reached by overextending the use of the gear oil, or overworking the gear oil, or by a factory underengineered component.

Im sure im not reaching that point. But i like to have the best. Cannot be sure Amsoil is the best since we havent seen all brands tested. But Amsoil is most likely on of them.

This summer I have used 4 different brands on a front differential with an installed locker. Had some run in with some big stones, so each oil had only a max of 1000 miles.

I tried Valvoline DuraBlend (syn blend), Wally World SuperTech (dino), Mobil 1 (syn), and Royal Purple Max Gear (syn).

The Valvoline, Mobil, and R.P. all ran fine on the trails with no issues at all. I would open up the front diff cover right after running a trail... not by choice. No metal, foaming or anything else strange with those three (I believe they were all 140 weights). I was surprised with the Valvoline syn blend. It runs just as smooth as the full syns. I tried it in the rear axle as well and that usually whines without syn. But I haven't heard anything yet after changing it to the blend.

The wally-world super-tech 140 weight non synthetic... what a piece of garbage. As soon as I popped open the cover all I saw a nice big head of foam. It was like someone poured a Sam Adams pale ale to fast. I also spotted some metal shavings from the locker which freaked me out since I had not seen that before even after break-in.

Can't say anything about the super-tech synthetic gear oil, but for that price I'll stick with the Valvoline durablend.

Just figure I'd share my experiences.

I personally think Amsoil. I upgraded to a 75-110w in the rear diff of my Tacoma that specs 75-90w. Reason being is its lifted and has a little bit bigger tires on it. I also like that you can do long drains with it as well.

Amsoil gear lube improves fuel milage, this is why I use it, and it is cheaper than valvoline/mobil1 shelf oil here in florida.
no brainer

Yes, Amsoil is cheraper than Valvoline, but I only purchased the Valvoline because limited slip additives were already mixed in by the factory, and I prefer it that way. Royal Purple was on sale for $9 a quart, that is why I got it at the second gear oil change, and it contained limited slip additives. Of course mom was paying for the chemical that I put in her car, so cost saving was not exactly priority #1. I never saw an Amsoil gear oil with the limited slip additive included. If there is one, I WILL use it in the future.

fwiw, Redline is testing their gear oils in the Brookfield vis test and foam testing. They plan on putting out a response to the Amsoil paper.

I knew Buster would contact Redline. What else did they say? Bad batch #56292/60840001663? Amsoil made the numbers up? Their fluid is better after usage?

Actually I didn't contact them but a friend of a friend told me. They run these tests every so often to make sure their product is on spec, which most probably do. The #'s Redline has for their product on these tests is not what Amsoil has on the white paper. Not sure if it's a RL QC issue or what....no excuses here. It is what it is. If anything, RL will simply improve their weaknesses if they find it to be the case. I fully trust the white paper and as others have said, it makes the other guys pay more attention.
