Best powered subwoofer under $400, for stereo (not movies)

A few issues I've had with self-powered subs is all down to the amp.

1. cutting a big hole in the box for the amp weakens the structure in most cases
2. the amp build quality is usually very sub-par and often fail in 5-10yrs
3. the amp is subject to excess vibration & heat which aids early failure

My recommendation is to spend a little more on a passive sub & proper amp combo. You gain the flexibility of selecting components that suit your application and/or can upgrade either one down the road. Yes it's not as compact / easy / clean but from an investment & sound perspective I believe it's far superior.

I really miss having a nice sound system for my TV! I always had a good subwoofer and quality speakers and it really made watching movies a lot more enjoyable. But now that I’m in an apartment I just can’t do that anymore. I used to love PSB speakers, they are a Canadian company that makes high quality stuff at a decent price. I have tried their headphones too and they were amazing.

I've got this one in my primary home basement home theater.
Paid $300 delivered 5 years ago. Some have reported amp problems but mines been fine. I don't use it for music much but every now and then a good YouTube video live song...for movies... I think they record it on the Richter Scale at the University of Delaware.

One of the best subs I had was the JBL E150P, 2nd the Polk PSW10. My taste is generally music and I find 10” subs to have just the right amount of punch while having tight bass.. 12s can get sloppy. I’ve heard some pretty good sounding 8” subs also.

That Polk PSW10 is the one I have in our beach house. I paid $90 for it brand new in 2014 or so.
I unplug it in the summer when crowds are down. It puts out amazing bass for it's size.
