best position for reading trans fluid temp?

between the side of the pan, a test port on the side of the trans and in-line after a cooler, which is the best place to get a fluid temp reading?

in-line after a cooler is an easy install as is the test port, my feeling is that a collective fluid pool in the pan is more indicative of overall fluid running temp??

700R4 transmission in question. currently no running issues, more of an "intrigue" project, if i go ahead that is.

Of your options, I would say, oil pan temp. I would suggest on the outlet of the torque converter, before it gets to the cooler, that is where it will be the warmest.

Oil pan temp is the standard for reference.
Engines or transmissions.
Shoot for 170-190 average. Stress, towing, loads,etc will make this go higher, but short term higher temps are OK.
If it gets over 225-230, let it cool.

Today I ordered this kit:

I did some looking around and decided upon this since its a decent price, decent brand, has a good temp range, comes with the sender, a transmission pan plug-in option AND it comes with a nice little mounting bracket that is perfect for my old '89 lower dash.

Initially, im gonna start with the test port, on the next transmission service, I may, may change to reading temp at the pan.
