Best Paint Brush

Took advantage of the great weather yesterday to get some trim painting done outside. Realized that I have never taken my paint brush seriously like I do my other tools. I typically use Purdy simply because that is what Lowes sells.

Is there a better brush out there? Mostly painting with Latex - interior and exterior, but I do need to stain the fence again.

I have a question about brush care. Even with a brush comb, i have paint dry on the brush near where it meets the handle. When using the brush, it drys there even in use. Using a comb after gets the bristles separated, but paint is still there. Do you use a solvent after every use ?

I only use a solvent with oil paints or varnishes. For latex paints I use dish soap and water to clean them. If you're getting paint that is hardening near the heel there's a few things going on. You might be dipping the brush into the paint a little too deep, you might be cutting in ceilings or crown moldings and gravity is carrying paint into the heel. Or you might not be cleaning the brush enough during the course of the day.

FTR I don't use a brush comb, I found a good clean wire brush is the best. You only brush with it from the ferrule [the metal part of the brush below the handle] brushing down to the bristle tips only, one direction, not up and down. Painting during the winter months, especially in a house with forced hot air heat causes brushes to need more frequent cleanings. With latex paint I like to have the brush a little damp with water before loading it with paint. HTH

Purdy is a quality product . I have a couple of them . Clean them well and they will last . Also , use the correct brush for the type of paint .

What would be the best Corona brush for

A outdoor latex paint?

A thin Outdoor latex stain?

A oil base, like rust-oleum?

FTR I don't use a brush comb, I found a good clean wire brush is the best. You only brush with it from the ferrule [the metal part of the brush below the handle] brushing down to the bristle tips only, one direction, not up and down.

I use a brush-comb, and then a 'small' wire brush.
Then hang vertically to finish drying.
When I put my brushes away, they look brand new.

For inside and outside latex paints and "thin" latex stains I use their Tynex/Orel Professional "Cortez" and "Montgomery"series brushes. If you can find them. For oil base any of their pure bristle brushes are good. I stocked up on them a few years back so they might have made some changes. "Rust-oleum" imo is hard on brushes. If you have a problem finding them PM me and I'll try to cross reference them. My guy still has the brushes I mentioned. Although since I retired I don't go there much.

Mine look good too, the problem I had was certain employees didn't care for the tools the way I did. That's common unfortunately.

Purdy and Wooster the best I know of. Lowe's Valspar brushes are decent quality I have had fine results with them as well.

Purdy bristles are held in place by the ends being encased in epoxy.

You will almost never see a bristle pull out and be stuck in the painted wall.
