Good morning men. The car is a 99 Saturn SL2 with a 16 valve DOHC engine & 104,000 miles.

I am into the final rinse phase of my 2nd ARX treatment. Saturn's are known for using oil without visable smoke from the exhaust. They are also known for gummed up ring packs. This car needs a quart added every 1000 to 1200 miles. I have been using 5w30 dino (whatever name brand is on sale) & a Wix filter doing 3000 mile OCI's & plan on continuing that practice. The ARX removed a lot of gunk, but there is no noticeable improvment in oil useage.

I use MC Synthetic Blend in my 2 Ford products & I like it.
What should I use in the Saturn to keep it clean? I don't want the oil useage to get any worse. The car runs perfectly. Thanks for your time.

In regards to what oil to use to cut consumption, it's a roll of the dice...if those rings are locked, nothing will really help consumption save for replacing the rings. Auto-Rx and LC an only do so much. I suggest trying a High Mileage 5w30 from Pennzoil or Castrol...thicker to cut consumption, thin enough to start easily in the cold weather.

For making an enging clean...Use Auto-Rx to get it clean. Use Lube Control (LC) to keep it clean. Use Fuel Power (FP) to keep the EGR and fuel system clean.

I've been using the LC/FP regimen for about 55K now. Proof that it works:

I don't know. I've been running Maxlife 5W30 for the last 1600 miles and my dipstick is still FULL. Previously, I was getting 1 qt/2-2.5k miles. Then again, I replaced the PCV with a new Delco one, and replaced the valve cover and plug tube seals.

Those are some pictures of mine. 7-10k OCIs on 5W30 dino, no additives. Mostly city driving. No problems either.

Don’t forget that some of the Saturns, pre 2002 or 2001 had faulty oil rings which would cause the high oil consumption even though the engines were clean. I personally have a 2001 and 2002 and I did not notice any major consumption, roughly 1qt per 5K miles. I am running synthetics just so that I do not have to climb under the car every 5k to change the oil.
Someone here has mentioned the faulty rings, you may even search some threads to see if you can find that posting, if it is indeed consuming more than it should use DINO to offset the cost.
One of my cards is on a 3oz auto-rx maintenance dose, the other on a LC regiment so I am waiting to see which valve cover will start to leak first.
