allright, first post here so be kind.

I just ordered some Auto-Rx and will be going through two cycles (my 1991 Chevy S-10 w/4.3L TBI
V-6 and auto tranny have 282,000 miles on it, all original!)

Anyway, after i'm done with the cleaning, I want to know what oil would best suit my Truck. I have a 34 mile commute one way in the morning downhill and the same 34 mile commute back uphill in the evening. I also happen to drive a little for work.

I've read a little about moly and that sounds like a good Idea. Good sources?

So... Suggestions???

You did not mention if you wanted a synthetic or dino. I like the Valvoline Maxlife synthetic. IIRC, it is actually a PAO blend. It has viscocity on the high side to keep consumption down. It is at a pretty good price point. Mobil 7500 seems to be another good one, a little cheaper.

I guess I'm open to all suggestions, but I think I'd rather run a Dino, although I have thought about the regular Valvoline Maxlife.

Pablo.
thanks for the advice

I was only joking, sheesh. Sorry.

What change interval are you looking for?

In my 4.3L Blazer I always had great results with Pennzoil. 10W-30. Has a decent amount of moly.

If you want to go synthetic I would use the Amsoil 5W-40.

If you want the best economy, stick to Castrol GTX 5w30.

It has a good dose of moly and GTX is about the best conventional oil money can buy.

Just don't use a Fram orange oil filter with it. Stick to AC Delco or WIX oil filters for good filtering and construction.

If winter starts are no factor, I'd run "on sale" 10w-30 dino. If consumtion is an issue, maybe throw in a quart or to of 15w-40 Chevron Delo.

change intervals...

Well, i've always done it every 3000,
i'm kinda addicted to changing my oil,
I really enjoy it.
Its got me this far.

And thanks for all the input, i'm just trying to get the truck to run as long as possible.

if temps don't ever go too low throughout the year.. Chevron Delo 400 would probably be the best bet to get the most bang-for-buck. HDEOs will keep the old engine clean after your arx treatment better than a regular dino... At about $7.50/gallon at walmart it is a steal. (considering, it has a decent content of hydrocrack, and very beefy add pack).

And at that price, you don't have to worry about being addicted to changing your oil.

So, I have heard:

1)Valvoline Maxlife synthetic
2)Mobil 7500
3)Chevron High Mileage
4)Pennzoil. 10W-30
5)Amsoil 5W-40
6)Castrol GTX 5w30
7)"on sale" 10w-30 dino
8)15w-40 Chevron Delo

Well, that is a selection. I think I'd like to stick to a Dino, don't really see the value in a synthetic at this stage in the game, so that narrows it down a bit. And the Chevron Delo was mentioned twice...

Does anybody want to give me good reason to choose one of the aforementioned? Any good chemical/scientific reason? Or is everybody just going to say "it worked for me, so it's the best."?

I guess what i'm trying to say, is that some consensus would make me much more comfortable.

Thank you all for your time.

Actually all those different suggestions show you that it really doesn't matter a whole lot which oil you use, just as long as you change it as often as you should. My suggestion is any 10w30 high mile formula on sale, or you know, the cheapest one. Delo is good, but thick, you'd have to try it once to see if you like it, it would probably keep the engine real clean, but so would just about any oil at 3000 mile oci's. Have fun, i'm thinkin' about getting a small pickup, I hope to get one of those chevys with that motor.(or a ford with their version of a bullet proof v6, the 4.0)

Of the oils I've seen at my local Wal Mart Super Center ...I'd pick:

- Havoline 10W-30,

- or the 5 Gallon jugs of 10W-30 Castrol GTX or Penzoil on sale.

At that mileage changing every 2500 miles might be a safe practice, especially if you started to have a coolant leak.

[Kind of funny, since I'm still running Redline 10W-40 at 8K OCI in our old BMW.]

I also might add 4 oz of the Valvoline Synthetic Oil Treatment , or the red bottle Maxlife Oil Treatment which is easier to find since Wal Mart carries it.

I bought a 5 gallon jug of Quaker State Synthetic Blend for 4x4s, SUVs and Trucks in 10W-40 for $10.00 or so. Maybe that's a good deal in a 10W-30?

Since Shell, Quaker State, and Pennzoil probably all now use decent basestocks.

much engine piston ring blowby? if so, use one of the hi mileage Truck SUV major brand dino's, stick with 0W30 or 5W30, whatever is on sale and change at least every 3k with new top line filter, add the Valvoline VSOT, 5 oz.
change the PVC valve every 10k- very important if ring blowby, cheap insurance and more important than brand of oil on hi mileage engine.
run Seafoam thru a vaccum line to clean valves and Techron or Regane in the gas to clean TBI.
what is OCI on tranny ATF? if tranny goes with this many miles on truck, end of story.
change ATF every 30k by full capacity gentle flush when hot, drain thru return line out of cooler, 3 quarts in 3 quarts out, shift thru gears, until tranx rated capacity reached, check hot and top off.

If that were my truck, I would run cheap "store brand" oil & filters from either AZ, AAP, or O'Reilly. I see no reason to spend more, for your application. All of the store brand oils from the 3 places above will carry current API certifications, & will provide excellent protection for your Chevy.

A few BITOGers have cut open & inspected some of the store brand filters, too. From everything I've read, the store brand filters from the 3 places I mentioned seem to be above average in quality.

I'd say $.49 cent Chevron with some Delo added for winter months. I use it in my high mileage cars and love it.

Are you saying you flush your own vehicles?

Not sure I would flush on a engine with those miles. Maybe use a thin oil instead.
